“I want the fans to know” - Yoane Wissa reveals truth on exit talk and return from injury
A lot is being made of Yoane Wissa's future at Newcastle United after a disastrous first season for the Congolese forward.
After Yoane Wissa pushed so hard to get his 'dream move' to Newcastle in the summer, going on strike at Brentford to force the £55m move through, it seemed like karma wasted no time in punishing him for the way he went about things.
Just days after signing for Newcastle, Wissa picked up a bad knee injury on international duty with DR Congo, which put him out of action for four months.
Due to a lack of time on the training pitch, when Wissa did return to fitness, he was way off what was expected, in terms of fitness and understanding of how Newcastle plays. This has seen the 29-year-old struggle for form, and at the moment, he can't even get into the team with Will Osula occupying the first-choice striker spot.
Wissa admits he rushed back from injury
Wissa's lack of form has raised questions over his future already. Even though the Magpies paid well over the odds for him in the summer, there have been heavy suggestions that Newcastle could be looking to cut their losses and move him on in the summer.
In an interview with Joel Beya TV on YouTube, Wissa has shared that he pushed himself to return from his injury too early as he was desperate to help the team, and that he is desperate to prove to the fans that he wants to be here.
"I am a soldier. I will keep going. I want the fans to know the love I have for this shirt. Looking forward to next season, I understand how big this club is, I hope I'm going to do better. It's such a privilege. I just want to wear the shirt.
“I didn't wait the proper time to come back (from injury). It should have definitely been more. You just want to catch the train, but that was impossible, because my knee wasn't right."
Wissa is proud to wear the Number 9
Wissa even said that he was so proud to be handed the iconic number 9 shirt when he arrived, and he still feels that pride today.
Nothing in his interview suggested that he was jaded or regretted his decision, and it's clear that he just wants to do well at the club and repay everyone for their faith in him and for what has been, by anyone's standards, a poor season.
The real question is whether or not he'll be given the chance to prove himself with so much talk about a potential exit just one year after arriving. We hope he's given a chance, but if he is, he absolutely has to take it with both hands.
