Manchester City enter race for Sandro Tonali in £200m midfielder swoop - Report
Manchester City could be the next destination for Sandro Tonali, according to a new report.
Just as it was looking like Tottenham Hotspur had the edge in the race for Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali, Manchester City have stuck their elbows out and barged their way into the mix.
Spurs are rumoured to be very keen on signing Tonali, and naturally, given that, despite their recent performances in the Premier League, they are still part of the 'Big Six', the media is loving the idea, especially as they can use London as a big selling point.
However, The Athletic is now reporting that Manchester City may get involved in the race for the Italian.
Sandro Tonali to Man City?
Newcastle are open to selling Tonali; that has been clear for months, but CEO David Hopkinson insists that a sale would be on Newcastle's terms, which could mean a £90 million-plus price tag.
That doesn't seem to be putting off Manchester City, though, who are chasing former Magpie Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest. That deal is going to end up costing over £120 million alone.
City have a few midfield positions to fill after Bernardo Silva's departure and the fact that Rodri is entering the final year of his deal. Bringing in Anderson and Tonali could keep them ticking over for a good few years.
Newcastle could push for a part-exchange
Ignoring the fact that Man City are potentially about to spend over £200 million on two players while they are STILL facing 115 charges for breaching PSR, this could be the preferred move for Newcastle.
Given Newcastle's interest in James Trafford, he could be used as a makeweight in the deal, and Newcastle could maybe even add another player into the mix too. It will keep Man City's financial outlay down and give Newcastle a couple of potential new stars.
We could soon see just how important London is to foreign players if Tonali chooses Manchester over the bright lights of the capital.
