Sky Sports journalist gives Anthony Gordon update as exit rumours grow
The rumours around a potential summer exit for Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon show no signs of going away.
If anything, the claims are growing stronger, and the story around why the England star wasn't involved on Saturday has done nothing to ease fears.
Just over 24 hours after insisting that players who aren't willing to give 100% to the cause will not play for his Newcastle side, Eddie Howe put out his team sheet for the game against Bournemouth, and Anthony Gordon's name was nowhere to be seen.
Reports came out a couple of hours beforehand claiming that Gordon had picked up a hip injury in training, which was the same line delivered by Howe at full-time. There were a few holes in the story that fans noticed immediately.
Something is rotten in the state of Newcastle
Howe claimed that Gordon had picked up the injury on Wednesday, went for scans on Thursday, and he already knew he wouldn't be available for Saturday. Yet, he never mentioned it at all during Friday's press conference, which you'd have thought he would have done to caveat his point about players not playing for him if they weren't committed. By stating that Gordon would miss Saturday at that point, it would have stopped all the speculation before it started.
The England winger is constantly being linked with a move away, with Bayern Munich the current favourites to take him off Newcastle's hands.
Sky Sports Switzerland's Sacha Tavlolieri has added to the claims again on Monday morning, saying that Newcastle are now drawing up a list of replacements and are open to letting the 25-year-old leave in the summer, and that Gordon is keen on the move to Bayern, having been inspired by Michael Olise, who joined from Crystal Palace last year.
Anthony Gordon's time looks to be up
There were unconfirmed claims doing the rounds on Saturday that Gordon and Howe had had a bust-up, and that's the real reason he wasn't involved.
Whatever is really going on, it is looking increasingly likely that Gordon will part ways with Newcastle in the summer.
Something hasn't been right with Gordon all season. He's had his moments, sure, but there have been many times when his commitment and attitude have rightly been questioned by fans.
We don't think anybody is questioning his ability, but his desire has been lacking at times this season, and it hints that he may be feeling his career would be best served elsewhere. If that's the case, then we have to get him out of the club before that toxicity spreads. We don't want him to go, but we don't want players who aren't committed to the cause either.
