Toon target in trouble for controversial posts - The mixed view from Germany on Felix Nmecha

by Olly Hawkins · 15 June 2023, 12:52

Earlier this week, The Telegraph's Luke Edwards revealed that Newcastle are readying a £15m bid for Wolfsburg's Felix Nmecha.

Since then, we've reached out to Bundesliga pundit and FootballTransfers reporter Ronan Murphy, who has shared the good, bad and ugly on the former Man City midfielder.

His physicality, quality in possession and dribbling skills are praised, but Murphy reveals that the 22-year-old is in trouble with the DFB (German Football Association) for homophobic posts shared earlier this month and back in February.

Here's our Q&A in full with Ronan:

Q1) What are his strengths and weaknesses as a player?

"He provides a lot of height (6ft 3') in midfield, and has the strength to go with it. He’s excellent in possession, and is confident dribbling the ball past players before making forward passes."

"As for weaknesses, he can be too confident at times, trying to overdo it with the ball rather than taking the easy option."

Q2) Do you think he'd fit Howe's high-intensity style, where maximum effort and pressing is often a must?

"He’s extremely versatile, and is a proper box-to-box midfielder. Howe would love him as he never stops working on and off the ball."

Q3) What is his character like? We seem to have adopted a 'no idiots' policy:

"He’s already been in trouble in Germany and with the DFB (German FA) for sharing homophobic and transphobic social media posts."

Q4) If you had to compere him to a current Premier League player, who would it be?

"The official Bundesliga site compared him to Zinedine Zidane cause he’s a tall, box-to-box midfielder. But let’s not get carried away!

"FootballTransfers’ own Newcastle fan Jacque Talbot asked would he be an upgrade on Scott McTominay, and it’s probably a fairer comparison. He probably has a similar level to him at the moment, but Nmecha has much more potential."

Q5) Finally, there's been talk of a £15m bid. That seems like a low fee and potential bargain?

"The fee is because you’re buying potential rather than current ability.

"It’s a gamble for a buying club and Wolfsburg usually invest well, so £15-20 million will probably allow them to sign two players with upside."
