Ally McCoist tells brutal truth around Anthony Gordon amid Bayern Munich links
Newcastle United look poised to at least speak with Bayern Munich over the sale of winger Anthony Gordon.
Speculation around a move to Germany for the England star has been rife of late, and it has now got to the point where an asking price has been reported.
It's believed that Newcastle would be willing to sell Gordon to Bayern Munich if the German champions are willing to part with £75 million to do so.
Newcastle paid Everton £45 million in 2023, and the forward took a while to get going in his new surroundings, but then had the season of his career after lifting the Under-21 European Championships with England.
Eventually, the lack of rest caught up to him, and his form dipped before getting it back again. However, this season, he has been the definition of hit and miss.
'Far too much'
That inconsistency is why Ally McCoist is confused by Bayern's interest and Newcastle's valuation. The former Scotland striker claimed on talkSPORT that £75m is too much for someone who wouldn't even get into Bayern's starting XI.
“£75m? Far too much. Good player, I like him, but he hasn’t shown any level of consistency in the league. I would say his best form has been in the Champions League or certainly Europe. Would Bayern Munich be willing to pay £75m for somebody who wouldn’t be an automatic starter?”
Given Bayern has some incredible talent who can play in every position Gordon is comfortable in, it's a good point that he may find himself sitting on the bench a lot if he makes the move in the summer.
Where would Gordon fit at Bayern?
Luis Diaz is the first choice on the left for Bayern, who also have Serge Gnabry, Jamal Musiala, Harry Kane and Michael Olise, who play in the other positions Gordon could find himself in.
Newcastle obviously want to ensure that losing Gordon is worthwhile financially, so we understand why they've set such a high price, and the way we see it, if Bayern Munich are willing to pay it, then it's their problem how they fit him into the team.
It feels like there's still a lot to be worked out on this one, but with Newcastle wanting their big sales sorted before the World Cup, they'd better hurry up and sort it all out.
