Anthony Gordon sale could reach £80m as Barcelona take lead - Report
The situation with Anthony Gordon's impending exit from Newcastle United has kicked up a gear since the season ended.
Bayern Munich were the favourites to sign the England winger as the season drew to a close, but the German side has now fallen behind Barcelona in the race for the £80 million-rated star.
It has looked almost inevitable that Gordon would leave Newcastle in the summer as Eddie Howe kept the winger on the bench for the final few games of the season. Gordon himself looked uninterested as he stood away from the team as they soaked up the adulation of the fans inside St James' Park after the final home game of the season.
It looks like there's no way back for the former Everton man, and now it's just a case of where he ends up.
Barcelona take the lead
It was revealed by Spanish media on Wednesday morning that Barcelona are in talks with Newcastle, and Craig Hope has added further context to the story.
According ot the Daily Mail, the clubs are working on a deal that could see the figure meet Newcastle's £80 million valuation with add-ons, something that Bayern were reluctant to do.
Liverpool is watching on with interest and could spring into action, although it's believed that Gordon prefers a move abroad, with the Spanish media claiming that his preference is a move to Barcelona.
The Mail claims that Barcelona has the finances available to make the deal happen, but they would need to sell players in order to register Gordon.
Things are moving along nicely
We're just glad that Gordon's preference is to move abroad. The last thing we need is Gordon coming back playing at his best against us. Although he never managed to do that for us against Everton, so maybe we're worried over nothing.
It feels like things are gathering pace, so Newcastle may get their wish of having Gordon's future sorted before the World Cup gets underway.
That would give Ross Wilson a clear vision of what's needed and also what kind of money he's going to have to play with.
