Awful 2/10s and one 7 - Newcastle player ratings from Bournemouth defeat
Another hard watch at St James’ Park as Newcastle United fell to 2-1 defeat to Bournemouth; our sixth in the last seven domestic games on Tyneside.
Will Osula grabbed a goal back in the second half to make it 1-1, but more woeful defending was our undoing late on as the Cherries won it in the 85th minute.
Here are our marks out of 10 and comments on each player involved in yesterday’s pitiful display.
Starting 11
Ramsdale (4) - Another indifferent performance as he again looked uncomfortable under high balls and could have maybe done better with the winning goal, where he was caught scrambling again. Four games left in his Newcastle career.
Livramento (2) - Comfortably his worst performance in a black and white shirt. Looked completely disinterested and offered absolutely nothing in attack. Has a complete inability to beat the first man when he crosses and the less said about his “long” throws the better. Hobbled off with yet another injury which may be a blessing as he was playing himself out of a move in the summer on current form.
Thiaw (4.5) - Was far from the worst on the pitch but still levels below what he can do. Won a few headers but is a key part of a defence that habitually switches off late in games.
Botman (4) - Guilty of giving away possession all too frequently and has to take some of the blame for the winning goal. Did make a couple of desperate blocks and slide tackles to thwart goalscoring opportunities.
Hall (3) - Beaten far too easily round the outside by Rayan and struggled all half to contain the young Brazilian. Offered very little in attack either and was hooked at half time. Not a good day for a player who has been one of our most consistent.
Miley (5) - Tried hard but still looks short of peak match fitness. Looked exasperated at times as he often had nobody to distribute the ball to. Would like to see him at right back again as he has more time on the ball and can have a greater influence in attack.
Tonali (6) - One of very few who put in a shift in but was let down by those around him. Winning goal came off the back of Tonali pressing high up the pitch with zero support from him teammates. That moment encapsulated the complete disinterest and lack of urgency from his teammates.
Ramsey (4) - Started brightly but fizzled out very quickly and was largely anonymous after that. After some promising performances he reverted back to his form from the start of the season in which he completely underwhelmed. Can expect to be on the bench for the next game.
Elanga (2) - Genuinely may have been one of the worst attacking performances I have seen. Overrunning the ball, horrific first touch, dreadful decision making, no ability to beat a man and a failure to even make the simplest pass. Shocking.
Barnes (3) - He wasn’t much better than Elanga. Provided little support in defence when Hall was struggling and was a complete non factor in attack. Never beat his man and looked weak throughout.
Osula (7) - Took his goal well although he does seem to make things look more difficult than they should be! Pressed a lot from the front and held the ball up well on occasions. Does have a tendency to run aimlessly at times and wasting energy. Wasn’t given any support in the press from him teammates though.
Substitutes
Trippier (4) - Tried to settle us down, but his lack of mobility is becoming more evident week after week. Has unfortunately become a liability in defence and is offering nothing going forward either, aside from the odd ball chipped in behind.
Guimaraes (6) - A welcome return for Bruno but not even he could rouse a performance out of his teammates. Fortunately didn’t get the assist for the goal as it may have been ruled out for offside, but it was refreshing to see a midfielder look forward and play through balls. Had a chance at the end to equalise but was denied by the keeper.
Murphy (3) - Did more than Elanga in attack but defensively at fault for the winner. Completely lost Truffert and showed no urgency to get back and defend.
Burn (NR) - Headed a big chance over late on. Forced to play at left back after Tino’s injury.
Woltemade (NR) - A few neat touches, but came on so late it was hard to make an impact. Feel for him.
