John Ruddy shares Sir Bobby Robson quote as he says goodbye to Newcastle United

Veteran goalkeeper John Ruddy was a surprise signing for Newcastle United two seasons ago, but now the 39-year-old is hanging up his gloves.

It came as a huge shock when Newcastle signed then 37-year-old John Ruddy when all the talk was about signing a young goalkeeper to be the long-term replacement for Nick Pope.

After his signing, it was revealed that Ruddy was brought in to be part of the training camp for goalkeepers to pass on his vast knowledge, although he was also given a squad number and spent quite a few games sitting on the bench.

As the last season drew to a close, Ruddy announced his intention to leave the club when his contract expires, as he looks to set off on a new career as a sporting director.

John Ruddy said goodbye to the Geordie nation

Ruddy has now said his goodbyes on Instagram, thanking the 'goalkeepers union' and thanking Newacstelf or welcoming him and his family.

Geordies…
Thank you for welcoming me and my family to your club. The last photo says it perfectly.
So fortunate to meet and work alongside amazing people. Big shout out to the GK union, led by @barts2729 & @jalal14gk for making every day enjoyable and stimulating.

But perhaps the best touch was him sharing a picture of the late, great Sir Bobby Robson along with part of his famous quote: "It’s the noise, the passion, the feeling of belonging, the pride in your city. It’s a small boy clambering up stadium steps for the very first time, gripping his father’s hand, gawping at that hallowed stretch of turf beneath him and, without being able to do a thing about it, falling in love.”

Good luck, Big John!

John Ruddy was the ultimate professional, and though we didn't understand his signing at the time, he was obviously doing something right as he earned himself a contract extension.

Also, just looking at the replies from the players on his post, it's clear he was well-liked at the club, and that certainly goes a long way with us.

A move to being a sporting director is an interesting choice, and we wish him the best of luck on his new endeavour.
