Sean Steur 'doomed to fail at Newcastle' - Bizarre quotes from Dutch media

Newcastle United completed their third signing of the summer on Thursday, announcing the arrival of Sean Steur.

The 18-year-old Dutch youth international arrived at Newcastle from Ajax in a deal worth £23 million after breaking into the Eredivisie side's first team last season.

Steur had been earmarked for big things by Ajax, and they were hoping to tie him down to a contract until 2030 this summer but Newcastle took advantage of a delay in talks and launched a bid that progressed very quickly.

Suddenly, the Dutch media seems to have turned on Steur since he left the Netherlands, with one journalist saying that he is doomed to fail.

One Dutch journalist isn't taking Steur's departure very well

De Telegraaf's Wim Kieft has said some pretty negative things about Steur after he turned his back on Ajax, as relayed by FC Update.

“As an 18-year-old youth international, you’re certainly nowhere near ready for Newcastle United’s first team.

“Or does anyone think that the guaranteed starting place he was denied by Ajax is actually guaranteed in England?

“Steur is doomed to fail at Newcastle United, because it’s not just about how good you are on the ball there. He’s a decent footballer, but in the Premier League it’s also very much about physicality, pace and strength in challenges. Steur already struggled with those aspects at Ajax. So, what’s a teenager like him doing at Newcastle United? (He) isn’t a Messi, Ronaldo or Mbappé.

“I would have given him another two or three seasons to develop at Ajax in the Eredivisie. Then someone like Steur could still make a brilliant move and cash in financially.”

Nobody is expecting Sean Steur to be Joelinton from the off

Newcastle haven't promised Steur a place in the starting eleven next season. It has been widely publicised that, while he will go into the first-team squad, he's seen as a player for the future.

It's clear he will have to work on his strength, most young players do, especially when they come from abroad from less physical leagues. Nobody is expecting the lad to be the replacement for Joelinton on day one.

We're taking this rant from Kieft as a good sign. It's like when you get dumped, and you start focusing on all of their faults to make yourself feel better.

Hopefully, Wim Kieft has a good support system around him to get him through this difficult time.
