WATCH: Miguel Almiron sent off at World Cup as new rule catches out former Newcastle winger
There's a term that gets thrown around on a weekly basis by fans whenever something crazy happens in football - "The game's gone". Well, the game's gone.
FIFA and their cohorts love nothing more than changing the rules of the game under the guise of trying to make it more entertaining. VAR has been one of the biggest changes to the game in years, and while it has succeeded in making the game entertaining, it has done it in all the wrong ways.
Goals are rarely celebrated immediately these days as, unless it's beyond a shadow of a doubt, there's always the fear of a VAR intervention coming along to ruin the moment.
In the World Cup game between Turkey and Paraguay last night, a new rule was enforced for the first time at the competition and it saw former Newcastle United winger Miguel Almiron fall victim to it.
Miggy Almiron was sent off for Paraguay last night
A new rule states that if a player covers his mouth when in a confrontation with an opposition player, they can be sent off. This follows a series of controversies in which players have reported abuse from their fellow professionals, but because the aggressor covered their mouth, it was impossible to determine guilt.
During a scrappy moment in the game last night which saw a heated moment between the two sides, Miguel Almiron clearly forgot about this new rule and was reminded by being sent for an early bath.
It was VAR that noticed the moment and the referee, after review, sent the Paraguay star down the tunnel right before half-time.
Paraguay still managed to hold on for the win after taking a very early lead via Matias Galarza.
Miguel Almiron made history
It's hard to imagine little Miggy saying anything too harsh to anyone with his little cute face, but rules are rules, and it's not about what he said; it's about how he said it, namely behind his hand.
Players cover their mouths all the time when they speak on the pitch these days, so it's going to be a difficult thing to unlearn, especially as it only counts when having a stern word with the opposition.
At least Almiron will go down in the history books now. Well done, Miggy?
