WATCH: Yoane Wissa scores vs Portugal to make World Cup history in Boston
Newcastle United striker Yoane Wissa was in World Cup action on Wednesday evening as DR Congo went up against one of the tournament favourites, Portugal.
After a horrendous season following his £55 million move from Brentford to Newcastle, which saw him injured on international duty just days after sealing his move, Wissa will have had to banish a lot of demons before stepping out for his country.
Wissa struggled tro find his way into Newcastle's side, falling behind Will Osula and Nick Woltemade in the pecking order after a series of less-than-impressive displays. He apparently improved massively in training towards the end of the season with Kieran Trippier issuing a 'wait and see' message to fans, but he never got into Eddie Howe's starting XI.
He was never really at risk of not being called up for DR Congo, and he was selected to lead the line against Portugal on Wednesday.
Yoane Wissa made history on Wednesday
After making it into their first-ever World Cup via the play-offs, you could have forgiven Congo for just enjoying themselves on the biggest stage.
However, the African side went for it against Portugal and forced a draw thanks to Yoane Wissa scoring DR Congo's first-ever World Cup goal to cancel out Joao Neves' opener.
Wissa rose like a salmon in the box to nod home, sending a huge reminder to Eddie Howe that he can find the net when he needs to.
Can we see a new Yoane Wissa next season?
We're chuffed for him to get on the scoresheet at the World Cup, and that goal should have done Wissa's confidence the world of good; if he can go on to bag another goal or two in the tournament, he should be able to bring that confidence back to Tyneside.
It looks as though Wissa will be around again next season, so we have to get behind him and hope that he can banish all the thoughts of his first season and move on.
We know that Wissa is a good player; we've seen it for Brentford, but after his big injury and rushing himself back, he obviously wasn't fully physically or mentally fit for what lay ahead at Newcastle, and it set him back.
We could see a whole new Wissa next season - if he's still here.
