Howe identifies Premier League striker as potential Chris Wood replacement - Report
Newcastle United are hoping to replace Chris Wood with Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin, according to reports.
The Sun claim that the 25-year-old is ‘at the top of the list of targets’ for Eddie Howe, who is searching for a mobile target man now Wood is close to sealing a loan-to-buy move to Nottingham Forest.
Calvert-Lewin has had tough first half of the season, making just nine Premier League appearances and scoring just once due to struggling with a number of injuries.
However, it seems he still has plenty of admirers on Tyneside. The Telegraph believed he was high on Howe's radar before Alexander Isak's arrival, with The Athletic revealing last summer that Dan Ashworth had also sounded out a potential move prior to a knee injury in August.
His stock has fallen over the past 18 months, but he did bag 36 goals across 2019/20 and 2020/21.
Here's what a recruitment source told The Sun about our alleged interest:
"Calvert-Lewin is at right at the top of the list of targets Newcastle have.
"They were interested in him last summer, and that interest remains.
"They think he could be a striker that could help take them to the next level both in the league, and in Europe."
A fully fit Calvert-Lewin would be an upgrade on Wood - he's six years younger and more mobile - but his injury record is a big concern when we already have Callum Wilson on our books.
