Callum Wilson speaks out on injury scare & reveals truth behind absence ahead of Liverpool clash

by Andrew Reynolds · 16 February 2023, 07:27

Callum Wilson has revealed that he was '80% fit' for our trip to Bournemouth, but didn't want to risk another injury after he 'felt some tightness' in training last week.

The striker didn't travel to the south coast for our 1-1 draw against the Cherries, but claimed that this decision was purely precautionary to avoid taking any risks.

Wilson also claimed that he had too often declared himself fit in the past and gone on to 'pull something after 20 minutes', adding that he doesn't want to 'cross that bridge again'.

Despite this, the England international was missing from training photos released on Wednesday afternoon, so it remains to be seen if he'll be available for Saturday's clash with Liverpool.

Hopefully he is back to full fitness for the cup final next week, but the decision to not sign a back-up striker in January following Chris Wood's departure has come into question, with Alexander Isak currently the only fit striker at the club.

Speaking to the Footballer's Football Podcast, Wilson said: "I was burning inside to go back there, to a club that has been so good to me. But then in training I felt some tightness.

"That can happen when you're working hard. We'd worked hard in previous games and we train hard too, similar to how we play. I can't take any risks any more.

"Too often I've been 80% fit, declared myself available to play and then ended up pulling up with something after 20 minutes. I'm not going to cross that bridge again."
