Alan Shearer's brutal message to Gary Lineker after Newcastle batter Leicester
Alan Shearer was full of praise for Newcastle United after their demolition of Leicester City on Saturday afternoon.
Jacob Murphy’s brace and another goal for Alexander Isak was added to by Bruno Guimaraes in a comfortable 4-0 victory over Ruud van Nistelrooy’s Foxes at St. James Park.
The Premier League’s record goalscorer went on to reiterate that Toon need to find consistency ahead of the Carabao Cup quarter-final against Brentford.
Shearer happy to see Newcastle 'back it'
Responding to Gary Lineker - an avid Leicester City fans - on the Rest Is Football Podcast, Shearer rubbed it in and explained why it was a much-improved performance:
"I've not seen such a one-sided game for a long time! I was there, I had a couple of pints, and it was so one-sided from start to finish. 4-0 did you (Gary Lineker) a favour...it should've been seven or eight!
“The Toon were right back at it. I said the previous week about the lack of energy, the lack of pressing – all of those things were back,” he said.
“Gordon was on that left side and they were back to being a horrible team to play against. They played really, really well. It was a really good all round performance. They need to keep it up. They’ve got two important games [this week]"
Shearer rightly alludes to the big games ahead. If Newcastle can replicate the “one-sided” performance against the Bees on Wednesday the prospect of a semi-final awaits.
Much better, but can we follow it up?
It begs the above question in a season plagued by inconsistencies. The momentum must build from here.
That level of dominance, with 27 attempts on goal to Leicester’s four, was a step in the right direction and the energy levels were back as we swarmed all over a poor Foxes side who simply couldn't get out.
The impressive performance against Liverpool at the start of the month preceded the ill-fated trip to Brentford, and this chance for redemption for the 4-2 defeat must be capitalised on.
Let's hope the Toon are 'at it' against tomorrow night, with Brentford's away form (played eight, lost seven, drawn one) handing us a huge chance to book a spot in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup.
