Newcastle closing in on Johan Bakayoko agreement - Big claims from Belgium
In the world of transfer rumours, there's sometimes no smoke without fire - and that could be the case regarding PSV star Johan Bakayoko.
Over the past fortnight we've seen The Telegraph (Luke Ewards), the iPaper (Mark Douglas) and Sky Sports' Sacha Tavolieri all report on our growing interest in the winger ahead of the January transfer window.
Today, it's the Belgian media who have jumped on the story, making some huge claims on his proposed move to St James' Park.
Bakayoko agreement close?
According to Belgian outlet Voetbal Krant, Newcastle have held 'very positive' talks with Bakayoko's representatives over a January transfer from PSV.
They state that the 21-year-old winger is keen to arrive on Tyneside and it's believed an agreement in principle over personal terms is 'very close.'
This indicates that wages and length of contract would not be a problem, showing the player is eager to make the switch, but the next step - which may prove more difficult - is agreeing a fee with PSV.
Voetbal Krant state that the Eredivisie giants are currently holding out for €50m (around £41m) for the attacker, but it's thought Newcastle's opening offer could come in at the €30m (£25m) mark.
That is a fairly significant gap in valuations and, as ever, it's hoped a compromise can be found between the two clubs, with Newcastle convinced that a lower offer may be accepted given the Belgian international is out of contract in just over 18 months time; much like summer target Marc Guehi.
A potential bargain?
If Newcastle can land Bakayoko for a fee anywhere between the £25-35m mark it could represent a real bargain for the club, following in the footsteps of some previous deals struck since the takeover.
It's been regularly reported that Paul Mitchell is pushing for value-for-money deals involving overseas talent with the potential to be just as good - if not better - than Premier League alternatives who'd cost considerably more.
Like Sven Botman (£35m from Lille) and Bruno Guimaraes (£40m from Lyon), Bakayoko would arrive as a young yet highly-rated talent who has impressed on the continent. However, he may cost half the figure it would take to prise say Bryan Mbeumo or Antoine Semenyo away from Brentford or Bournemouth, respectively.
Bakayoko has six goals and three assists this season, including two goal involvements in six Champions League appearances.
