Howe drops new stadium hint as Newcastle edge closer to biggest call of 2025?

Eddie Howe has dropped a further hint on where the future of Newcastle United may lie amid talks around St. James Park expansion versus a brand new stadium built elsewhere in the city.

It all feels a bit ‘what if?’ surrounding the talks of a move at the moment. What if we can’t secure planning permission for Leazes Park? What if we move, but the freemen don’t let us make alterations to St. James Park?

Howe has given an answer that thinks long term about the ramifications of a move, but the process needs to be completed six months before our share of games in the 2028 European Championships.

Howe drops stadium hint?

The implementation of new rules since the PIF-backed takeover of Newcastle in October 2021 has seen progress slowed. Profit & Sustainability Rules have had a significant impact on transfer proceedings.

Toon boss Howe is weary that new rules could be implemented at any time, and it’s starting to feel like we are perhaps being slowly fed pieces of information that hint towards the importance of a new stadium from a financial perspective.

"I don't know how the rules are going to change or if they are going to evolve through time, and I don't know how the club will continue to adapt to the rules,” is the latest from Howe.

“Our income is key and talk of new stadiums and all those things that will benefit us in our pursuit of bringing more income. They will be really important for us as a football club. That's for another day. My focus as always on the next game."

It’s proving a bit of a logistics nightmare more than a lack of desire, with the ownership group no doubt wanting to flex their muscles before the 2028 Euros.

New stadium key to the future?

There has been a long-term feel surrounding decisions made by the new owners, with the majority of our key first team players of a decent age - as well as significant investment in our academy setup.

Though there is some time pressure if we intend to get the project finished by late 2027, whether it be an expansion of the Cathedral on the Hill or an entirely separate stadium rebuild, it would be a surprise if the owners made a hasty or a poorly considered decision.
