Lloyd Kelly's £20m move to Juventus set to be decided by UEFA clause - Report

The details of Lloyd Kelly’s loan-to-buy move to Juventus have been revealed as Newcastle wait for a summer payout.

The 26-year-old’s time on Tyneside was short-lived, departing to Turin in January on a loan deal with an obligation to buy at the end of the season just six months after he arrived on a free transfer.

It has now been explained by Italian media how much Newcastle will receive for the defender, and the factors that must be met in order to trigger the buy clause.

Lloyd Kelly clause explained

Tuttomercatoweb report that Juventus' obligation to sign Lloyd Kelly permanently will be activated if they qualify for any UEFA European competition ahead of the 2025/26 season.

An initial loan fee of €3 million (approximately £2.5million) was paid by the Old Lady in January to secure the former-Bournemouth man until the end of the season, and the Magpies will receive a guaranteed further €14.5 million (approximately £12 million) should Juve qualify for any European competition.

Newcastle will also receive a further €6.5 million (approximately £5.5million) in future add-ons upon the achievement of certain 'sporting objectives'.

Juventus currently sit fourth in Serie A and must finish in the top six to guarantee European football, meaning the clause is likely but not guaranteed to be met. Here are the latest standings, as of Friday afternoon:

Champions League nightmare at PSV

Kelly has started at left-back in two Champions League play-off games that have ultimately proven to be a nightmare against PSV.

Juve came away with a 2-1 win at the Allianz Stadium in the first leg, but the Dutch side would be level on aggregate after 90 minutes of leg two earlier this week.

Kelly watched on as Ivan Perisic ran in behind to latch onto Noa Lang’s defence-splitting ball to make it 1-0 on the night before Timothy Weah, on the opposing flank to Kelly, put Juve back ahead in the tie 10 minutes later.

After that, Perisic’s cross from the right bypassed Kelly, and was bundled by ex-Mag Luuk de Jong into the path of Ismael Saibari who sent the game to extra-time, where Johan Bakayoko’s cross was turned home by Ryan Flamingo to dump Juventus out of the Champions League.
