A brutal end to our Champions League adventure - Barcelona 7-2 Newcastle

A brutal end to Newcastle United's 2025/26 Champions League campaign, as a game of two halves saw Barcelona run riot in a 7-2 victory (8-3 aggregate) at the Nou Camp.

On a night where Newcastle United had to be near-perfect at both ends of the pitch to overcome a Barcelona side who'd lost just once at home since last May, we simply weren't good enough defensively, spoiling a strong start that saw Anthony Elanga score twice to make it 1-1 and 2-2 in a frantic first half.

Barca didn't know how to handle our electric front three early on, Hall was a threat from left-back, and we looked like we could score every time we attacked, but the timing and manner of Barcelona's first-half strikes were a killer. One from Raphinha after two costly slips after just six minutes, such a soft set piece goal from Bernal and another Lamine Yamal penalty deep in stoppage time to make it 3-2 right on half time.

Their third goal felt like a killer and it proved to be just that, as the home side scored three in 15 second half minutes to finish us off, going on to win 7-2 as Fermin Lopez and Robert Lewandowski both got in on the act in a second half battering that was a tough watch at times.

For 75% of the tie across two legs, we were fiercely competitive and by no means out of our depth. But for 25% of it, in tonight's second half, our levels dropped massively and we were brutally punished, gifting Barca five of their seven goals on the night.

The story of Barcelona 7-2 Newcastle

Howe made five changes from our weekend win at Chelsea. Out went Sven Botman, Tino Livramento, Joe Willock, Nick Woltemade and Jacob Murphy, and in came Dan Burn, Kieran Trippier, Sandro Tonali (back from illness), Joelinton and Anthony Elanga.

We started so well in the opening exchanges, beginning on the front foot, putting them under early pressure, forcing a corner almost immediately and having the first effort on goal as Burn's shot on the turn was straight at Garcia.

Then Barcelona hit. Just like last week, our slips were punished, quite literally. Thiaw slipped on halfway, and so did Hall at the crucial moment, allowing Barca to get into the box before Fermin's cut-back was finished emphatically by Raphinha, giving the home side a 1-0 lead after six minutes.

Gutting, but we had to keep going. And we did! Hall and Barnes combined for a lovely one-two down the left and our star left-back produced the perfect low cross to set Elanga in behind. The Nou Camp froze in anticipation, as did thousands of Mags sat at home, and our £55m winger did not let us down. His biggest moment in black and white, surreal scenes and a deserved leveller for Newcastle United to make it 1-1 on 15 minutes.

Three minutes later, we only had ourselves to blame. Joelinton went into the book for a cynical foul on Yamal, ruling him out of quarter-final if we got through, and Barca scored from the resulting set piece, which felt inexcusable given the height difference. We totally switched off, leaving Martin free at the back post before Bernal tapped in. 2-1 Barca and, as unfortunate as their opener was, we only had ourselves to blame for this one.

We had to tighten up, with Barcelona getting their heads to successive corners just minutes after their second thanks to more slack marking. We were on the ropes, but we quickly fought back, AGAIN. Barnes burst in the box after more sharp work from Hall, and who was there again to finish? Anthony Elanga! 2-2 and another immediate response.

28 minutes in, four goals and an Elanga brace, making him the first visiting player to score a brace at the Nou Camp all season. And then the madness continued. Burn produced a world class piece of defending to stop what seemed like a certain Barca goal, a marginal offside denied Elanga setting up Gordon, Yamal somehow shot over when it looked easier to score and Lopez got away with another blatant booking for a rugby tackle on Joelinton; his second of the tie!

Then came the killer blow. Another stoppage time penalty just as we looked to get into the break level. Trippier needlessly pulled down Raphina at the back post, VAR checked it, a spot kick was given and Yamal converted, although Ramsdale was inches away from tipping it wide, looking frustrated he didn't do more as the home side celebrated going 3-2 ahead.

Howe made one half-time change, taking off a booked Trippier for the fit-again Tino Livramento, who had a big role to play at both ends of the pitch if we were going to get back into this one. Sadly, it wasn't meant to be.

In a five-minute burst that ended the game as a contest, we first saw Lopez burst clear and finish calmly before Lewandowski got above Tino to head home a corner, with Raphinha assisting both. A real shame to see us collapse so early in such a huge second half, especially when we were so competitive for so much of the first 45.

To make matters worse, we lost Tonali to what looked like a concerning groin injury, seeing him immediately replaced by Joe Willock, who may be starting Sunday's Tyne and Wear Derby at this rate.

5-2 Barca and it then got worse. Yamal skipped through our midfield, Thiaw looked clumsy in trying to intercept his through ball and Lewandowski did the rest to make it 6-2, scoring a brace against the side he used to support as a kid. Barca are ruthless, but it was more non-existent defending that you're simply not going to get away with against such high-level opposition.

The tie was done with 30 minutes and Howe reacted by making two more changes, potentially with Sunday in mind, as Nick Woltemade and Jacob Murphy replaced a booked Joelinton and tiring Elanga, who'd done himself proud with two first-half strikes.

Barca's seventh was the most self inflicted yet. He's been superb in recent months, but Ramsey's pass straight to a Barca shirt was a shocker, gifting Raphinha a second as the Catalans made it 7-2. At this point, we just wanted the tie to end, but with 20 minutes still remaining and Barca showing no sign of relenting, this was in danger of getting even more ugly if we didn't stem the tide.

Not only did our quality on the ball and overall sharpness suffer in the second half, it felt like we were a yard off in our attempt to maintain this man-to-man marking. Errors crept in, Barcelona went through the gears and we looked like a side who no longer believed (from Yamal's penalty onwards) after fighting our way back twice in a brilliant first half.

Next up, full focus on our final eight Premier League and getting back into those European spots, with the small matter of Sunderland at home on Sunday.
