Archie Gray bid rejected as Newcastle make move - Fabrizio Romano
We know it's hypocritical to be running a story from Fabrizio Romano after the pasting we've been giving him of late, but it's a story that's gaining traction and actually has some merit to it.
Fabrizio Romano is not very high on any Newcastle United fan's Christmas card list right now, given the way he's going about trying to disrupt Sandro Tonali, and not to mention his petty move of not mentioning NUFC in his post about Martin Dubravka's move to Spurs.
That being said, the man does have contacts, and he does often get things right, so as much as we don't have to like him, he can still be worth listening to.
The Italian transfer guru's latest Toon-based story is that Newcastle have had a bid rejected by Tottenham Hotspur for midfielder Archie Gray.
Newcastle have approach for Archie Gray knocked back
According to Romano on X, Spurs do not want to sell Gray, for whom they paid £30 million to Leeds United in 2024.
Newcastle were also keen on Gray at that time, but it was the North London side who won the race despite his Durham roots.
There's no mention of a fee by Romano, simply that an offer was made and rejected.
EXCLUSIVE: Newcastle send offer to Tottenham for Archie Gray, rejected by Spurs. Spurs made their position clear following the approach, with no agreement reached between the clubs at this stage. Told #NUFC remain interested, while Spurs stance is unchanged for now.
Let's go conspiracy wild!
Newcastle do have a long-standing interest in Gray which does make this claim slightly believable. What has our Spidey senses twitching is the absolute lack of detail in the claim from Romano.
Usually, if he's got solid information, he can't wait to share it with everyone. We can't help feeling that if this were genuine, he'd at least have some idea what kind of fee was being mentioned.
There's also this niggling feeling that this is all still part of the Sandro Tonali ploy. If this gets out into the wild and Newcastle fans start getting excited about Gray, then Spurs add Gray to their bid for Tonali, suddenly it's a deal everyone wants to do, and if the fans want it, then maybe the club will too.
We're grasping at straws a bit here, but if three agents meeting up after a game means a player is moving, then why can't we create our own wild conspiracy theories?
