'Dear me' - Anthony Elanga's Sweden confusion discussed by Graham Potter

Anthony Elanga scored the goal for Sweden on Thursday that earned them a draw with Japan, which was all they needed to qualify for the knockout stages of the World Cup.

Clearly, nobody told the Newcastle United winger that a point would be enough because, despite scoring an absolute peach of a goal that gave them the point they needed, Elanga's reaction at full-time was strange to say the least.

Rather than celebrating, Elanga appeared to collapse on the floor in frustration, clearly thinking that his wonder-strike wasn't enough to help his country progress.

Graham Potter's side are the masters of scraping by. They qualified for the tournament via the play-offs and have now qualified for the knockout stages via a third-place finish.

Graham Potter saw the funny side of Elanga's reaction

This is the first World Cup where a third-place finish could be enough to see you progress, so perhaps that slipped Elanga's mind in the moment.

Graham Potter seemed to find it amusing when he was asked about Elanga's reaction by the media at full-time (h/t Newcastle World).

“That explains a few things then! It couldn’t have been any clearer for him so he’s obviously thinking about something else. Bless him.

“I love him at the moment but dear me.”

Apparently, Alexander Isak didn't see the funny side, but who cares what he thinks, eh?

Not Elanga's proudest moment

We'll give Elanga the benefit of ht edoubt here. The adrenaline must have been coursing through him, and it sent him loopy. Either that, or his thicker than a submarine door.

We don't need him to be a Mensa member, though; we just need him to remember how to play for Newcastle like he does for Sweden.

Can Elanga restore our faith? If we'd have been linked with him now after his outings for Sweden, we'd be buzzing, but we still have last season's failures fresh in our minds. The jury is still out.
