Ex-Newcastle United boss Chris Hughton reveals cancer diagnosis
Former Newcastle United boss Chris Hughton has opened up about his battle with prostate cancer.
Chris Hughton, 67, was a popular figure on Tyneside who many fans feel got treated unfairly by Mike Ashley when he was sacked following a 3-1 defeat to West Brom.
Fans, ex-players and pundits vented their anger at the decision after Hughton had successfully guided Newcastle back to the Premier League, only to be let go at the first sign of a blip.
Alan Pardew was Hughton's successor, but many fans often wondered how things would have gone had the former Tottenham man been allowed to continue.
Chris Hughton was diagnosed with prostate cancer last year
Since leaving Newcastle, Hughton has had spells managing Birmingham City, Norwich City, Brighton, Nottingham Forest and Ghana.
Hughton has been out of a job since 2024 and has recently opened up to the Daily Mail about receiving a prostate cancer diagnosis last year.
"The news certainly didn’t scare me,' said Hughton as he discussed his health for the first time.
"I know everyone is different, but my first impression was 'I’ll be fine'. I didn’t instantly think 'this is probably just going to kill me.' I just thought, 'OK, we’ll have to do what we have to do'.
"I had very good advice and all the treatment options were given to me, and I decided to have my prostate removed. The recovery has gone really well.
"I’m one year post-operation and I feel good. It’s all gone very well. I’ve got a lot of energy. Keeping active and busy is part of how I am anyway, but it’s also about rehabilitation and keeping your mind active as well.
"I’m very comfortable with my prognosis and my post-operation feelings. I’m in a really good place."
We're glad to hear he's doing well
The report says Hughton spotted the signs early, and knowing he was high risk, he kept going for regular checks.
It's great news that they caught it early, and Hughton is now recovering well.
We wish him all the best. A top man who was a casualty of the Mike Ashley era.
