Newcastle cautioned against Jose Mourinho move with Eddie Howe’s future in doubt
Whenever Eddie Howe's job at Newcastle United looks uncertain, you can guarantee that Jose Mourinho's name will pop up in conversation.
Jose Mourinho has spoken about his admiration for Newcastle United that he picked up working under Sir Bobby Robson, and that's pretty much all some people need to hear to want him to be the next boss.
There was a time when Mourinho lived up to his moniker of "The Special One", and the hype was very real, but that was a long time ago, and he's done nothing of late to suggest he still has that magic touch.
Even today, though, there are Newcastle fans who think he'd be the best man to replace Eddie Howe.
Robert Huth doubts Mourinho could compete for big titles
Former Chelsea star Robert Huth has spoken to talkSPORT about Mourinho, and after praising him as a boss from his days at Chelsea, he went on to say that his best days are behind him.
"(Mourinho was) an absolute hero. He was incredibly tough on you, not just me, but everyone.
"He had really high standards, but he also treated you like a son. He was tough, honest, it wasn’t always pleasant, especially when you had a bad game or made a mistake.
"He would call you out, brutally. But at that time in my career, that’s exactly what I needed. I was 18 or 19, and at that age you think you’re the best player ever. You need that tough schooling.
"Everyone has their peak, players, managers, everyone. That doesn’t mean he can’t still do a job, but winning the biggest titles again? Probably not.
"That’s not disrespect, I love the guy but we all have our cycles, and maybe his time has passed. He’s still done well with most clubs he’s been at, but in recent years it’s been tougher.
"That doesn’t take away from what he achieved. There are just coaches now who are probably pushing the game forward more at the moment."
Mourinho isn't the one for us
For us, Mourinho doesn't even figure into our thinking when pondering who could actually take over from Howe.
Granted, we're still very much in support of Howe and think that axing him after one bad season would be insanity, but we have obviously discussed who could take over and take us to the next level, and in all honesty, there aren't many out there who could, and even fewer who would be available/interested.
Those of us who still back Eddie Howe get a lot of stick for living in the past and letting Howe skate by on what he's done in the past, but at least his successful history is recent; Jose Mourinho's glory days weren't even broadcast in 1080p!
