Newcastle eyeing Jose Mourinho as Eddie Howe's successor - talkSPORT
Eddie Howe is under pressure as Newcastle United boss, which means it's time for journalists to start throwing names around for potential candidates to replace him.
As sure as night follows day, Jose Mourinho's name will be mentioned as the next Newcastle boss whenever there's any sign that Eddie Howe's job could be on the line.
The Portuguese has been a top candidate for the job in the eyes of the media ever since the PIF took over the club, as his career history shows that he's the man for the job when that job is spending a shedload of money on the best players.
Along with his admitted admiration of Newcastle United that was instilled in him when working under Sir Bobby Robson, it's just so easy to always link the 63-year-old to the St James' Park hotseat.
TalkSPORT's article isn't convincing
With Howe's position looking rocky after yet another defeat on Sunday, talkSPORT has today reported that Jose Mourinho is a 'genuine contender' should Eddie Howe be dethroned.
The basis for their claims is that they believe the PIF will want a 'big name' to succeed Howe. They go on to mention Roberto Mancini and Andoni Iraola.
TalkSPORT also goes on to link Mourinho with the Portugal job after the World Cup while casually dropping in that he is currently the boss at Benfica. So it's not even as if he's on the market.
No way, Jose
We're not sure if you've detected by our tone, but we're not buying into the Jose Mourinho to Newcastle links at all, and nor do we want to.
He was the Special One once, but that was so long ago, and he's not reached those heights ever since. The man is still dining out on a reputation that should have left him behind years ago.
Mourinho will have his admirers, and there will be those of you reading this and hoping that it's true, but you have to remember that he's not going to have the money to spend on players he had at Chelsea when he was a top manager, he plays pretty boring football, and the man's attitude is honking.
He falls out with people wherever he goes. He'd be a novelty for a while, but we're confident it would be a disaster.
If we do replace Howe, we need a manager who can build a squad on a budget, is known for developing youngsters through the ranks and won't become a sideshow.
