PIF ready to show commitment to Newcastle United with big investment - Report
As negativity continues to be the order of the day around Newcastle United lately, it's perhaps no surprise that news of PIF cutting its funding in world sport, particularly LIV Golf, has created headlines that they could be ready to give up on Newcastle, too.
With the PIF cutting back its funding in sports investments, it was so easy to make the connection, with zero evidence, that they would be looking for a way out of Newcastle United.
The fact that the team is struggling for form and Eddie Howe is under pressure just makes it even easier for stories like this to gain traction.
There have been plenty of denials from within the club about the PIF looking for a way out, and now the iPaper has added more context in a report on Thursday.
The new training ground is moving forward
According to Mark Douglas, the PIF will soon affirm their commitment to Newcastle United when the sale of the land near Woolsington goes through, which is set to be the site of a new state-of-the-art training facility.
The iPaper has made clear that progress is being made, but things move slowly in the legal world, so it's difficult to put a timeline on things. However, they make it clear that the funds have been assigned and everything is moving forward.
It's not ‘new news’ that the club is looking at the site near Newcastle Airport, but it has been a while since we were told things were moving forward, so it's easily forgotten.
Newcastle building towards big 2030
We're not likely to see the new facilities open before 2030, which is another reason why we feel David Hopkinson's bold claims about being title challengers by 2030 felt overly ambitious.
Still, things are slowly moving in the right direction off the pitch, and this confirms that our majority owners are still very much committed to the cause.
Yasir Al-Rumayyan is due in town next week to meet with Eddie Howe, Ross Wilson, David Hopkinson and Simon Capper, so we may get some form of update after on the training ground, and maybe, if we're very lucky, we may get a mention on the stadium too. But let's not get too carried away.
