Thomas Tuchel speaks out on Tino Livramento injury and Lewis Hall snub

Newcastle United full-back Tino Livramento's World Cup is over before it even began after the 23-year-old picked up a new injury.

Taking Tino was always a risk given his injury record, but when he's fit, he is usually outstanding, so it was worth the risk, even though he was carrying a knock when he went out to the USA in the first place.

On Tuesday, though, it was revealed that Livramento had picked up a calf injury in training with the Three Lions and it was severe enough to put an end to his tournament dreams.

Livramento is heading back to England, with Trevoh Chalobah flying out to replace him. We, along with many others, feel that Lewis Hall would have been the ideal replacement for Tino, but once again, our star left-back was snubbed by Thomas Tuchel.

Thomas Tuchel explains Lewis Hall snub

There was method to the madness for the German, though, who spoke to reporters (via Sky Sports) about Livramento's injury and the reasons for calling up centre-back Chalobah to replace him.

"Tino was very disappointed and sad. All of us were. It was a bit of a shock when he had to stop training and he had a feeling that this could be an injury that could cost him the tournament. He was unfortunately right after assessment.

"We got the information that it’s about four or five weeks, which is unfortunately too long to keep on rebuilding and reintegrating him into the squad. We took the decision to send him home, which is disappointing.

"We called Trevoh Chalobah, because we can free up Jarell Quansah as a full-back on both sides. Djed Spence can play as a full-back on both sides. Trevoh comes as a centre-back alternative, which gives us full coverage in the back four."

You've got to feel for Hall

We can't help but feel for Lewis Hall once again. He seemed like the perfect player to call up to replace Tino. While not a natural right-back, he can play there, but it's on the left where England's options are limited anyway, so Hall would have brought more balance.

Thankfully, Hall is young enough that missing this one tournament won't be too much of a setback for him. With his quality, he'll no doubt get plenty more chances to shine on the world stage.

Let's hope that Tino's injury isn't a serious one and keeps him out of action just long enough to put off any potential buyers.
