Will Osula rewarded by Denmark as Eriksen collapse ends game early
Will Osula has had quite a remarkable end to the season with Newcastle United and now Denmark.
After starring in the Under-21 European Championships for Denmark last summer, Will Osula was rewarded with some game time for Newcastle at the start of the campaign while Eddie Howe continued his search for a replacement for Alexander Isak.
Howe would eventually spend £124 million on Yoane Wissa and Nick Woltemade, relegating Osula to a spot on the bench, and even almost selling him to Eintracht Frankfurt for £30 million on deadline day.
Thankfully, Newcastle pulled the plug on that deal, and ultimately, Osula became Eddie Howe's first-choice striker for the final few games of the season, where he scored five goals in seven games.
Will Osula has broken into the senior Denmark side
Osula's efforts for Newcastle were rewarded with him making his senior debut for Denmark during a friendly with DR Congo on Wednesday.
Speaking after that game, Osula told Danish outlet Bold that he is focused on continuing to perform at club level to establish himself in the Danish national side.
“Now I have made my debut and I am very grateful for that.
“If I continue to play well at club level, I hope I can become important for the national team and play a role here.
“I have to keep showing what I can do on the field and keep knocking.”
Denmark clash marred by Eriksen’s collapse
Denmark failed to qualify for the World Cup but have been partaking in friendlies this week. On Sunday, they took on Ukraine and Osula was given a spot in the starting lineup.
Unfortunately, the game was abandoned with Denmark winning 2-1 after Christian Eriksen suffered another cardiac event. The former Manchester United man, who famously collapsed in a European Championship game in 2021, which resulted in him being fitted with a special heart-starting device known as an Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator (ICD).
It was that very ICD that did exactly what it was supposed to on Sunday, with the Denmark doctor who saved Eriksen's life in 2021 releasing a statement confirming that, all things considered, Eriksen is doing well.
"Christian is doing well and walked off the pitch by himself. As I see it, the pacemaker responded as it should.
"He was briefly unconscious, but regained consciousness very quickly, and we were quickly in contact with him."
It will certainly make for a memorable full debut for Will Osula, albeit for the wrong reasons. The main thing is that Eriksen appears to be doing well and we wish him a speedy recovery.
