Yoane Wissa and Will Osula face off in World Cup warm-up on Wednesday night
Two of Newcastle United's strikers were in international action on Wednesday night as DR Congo got ready for the World Cup.
Denmark failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, but last night they faced off in a friendly against DR Congo, who made it into the competition via the playoffs.
After becoming Eddie Howe's first-choice striker for the final few games of Newcastle United's season, Will Osula also received a call-up to the senior Denmark squad for the friendlies held this month.
Osula starred for Denmark at last summer's Under-21s European Championships but has had to be patient to get his senior debut, which finally came last night when he was brought on at half-time in the goalless draw with Congo.
Will Osula made his senior debut for Denmark
Will Osula's stock is clearly rising, and while he wasn't able to mark his senior debut with a goal, he's clearly making the right noises.
Newcastle almost cashed in on Osula last summer, but a deadline-day move to Eintracht Frankfurt fell through, and then in January, there were rumours he could be on the move again, but an injury kept him at Newcastle.
That ultimately worked in Newcastle's favour as Osula scored five goals in Newcastle's final seven games of the season. Now the question is whether Newcastle keeps him or cashes in on his recent form. Eddie Howe has publicly said he wants to keep hold of his current strike force as he expects there's more to come from them next season.
Yoane Wissa played well for Congo
One player who really needs to step up is Yoane Wissa, who played 86 minutes for DR Congo last night but obviously also failed to get on the scoresheet.
Wissa apparently played well, though, and was given a rating of 6.9/10 by Sportstar.
We'll be watching DR Congo with interest during the World Cup to see how Wissa plays and whether we feel like we're going to actually get anything near what we paid for last summer.
