Will Osula set for reward as Newcastle build towards new-look 2026/27 - Report
To say that Newcastle United's forward line was a disaster last season would be putting it mildly.
We're not just pointing out the state of our misfiring strikers, but the entire front three, regardless of who was on the pitch. There was no cohesion, no bravery and no impetus.
Poor Nick Woltemade was so isolated it was hard not to sing the opening line of "The Sound of Silence" and imagine the world turning to black and white every time the camera cut to him standing in the field.
Thankfully, as the season drew to a close, one man rose above the mediocrity. William Idemudia Daugaard Osula. Scoring five goals in seven games at the end of the season, we finally started to see why Jason Tindall was so adamant we signed the young Dane who was recently handed his senior international debut.
Osula set for key role?
Osula has had a strange old time at Newcastle, with it seeming like Eddie Howe didn't fancy him at all. But we've seen that before with Lewis Hall and look how that turned out.
It's taken a bit longer for Osula, but he's finally starting to show that promise as he's calming down and becoming a bit more aware and more in control of what he's doing.
Now, according to the iPaper, he's set to be rewarded with a more prominent role next season. Mark Douglas reports that Eddie Howe has been impressed with his development and is ready to give him a bigger part to play.
The report also mentions how Osula could form part of a new youthful attack with Victor Munoz should that deal be completed - all signs are currently very positive on that front, after ongoing talks with Osasuna.
Has Will Osula won you over?
Osula has his doubters (looking at you, Karlos), and we absolutely get it. The word 'raw' was thrown around more than an episode of Hell's Kitchen when he first arrived, and for a long time, the Danish Under-21 international didn't seem to be progressing.
His raw pace and tricky feet were always standout attributes, but it always seemed like he didn't actually know what he was going to do until he did it, and he'd take himself by surprise and have to catch up.
Then we saw that amazing goal against Manchester United and things started to make sense. He's still not the finished article by any means, but based on his end-of-season form, he's the best we've got.
We're happy that it now looks like Newcastle will be keeping hold of the youngster. We definitely feel there's a player in there.
