Yoane Wissa and Anthony Elanga are proving they have plenty to offer Newcastle

Newcastle United spent around £110 million on Yoane Wissa and Anthony Elanga last summer, and both were absolutely shocking all season.

Both players arrived off the back of their best seasons in the Premier League, and they looked for all the world to be great signings, if, especially in Wissa's case, to be a bit expensive.

Wissa picked up a bad injury before he even trained with his new club and missed four months, and in his desperation to get back to action, returned too early and never managed to get to full fitness.

His appearances were few, and his impact in those appearances was very minimal. Anthony Elanga also found himself on the bench more often than not, and when he found his way onto the pitch, you'd have been forgiven if you thought he had never played the game before.

Yoane Wissa and Anthony Elanga are killing it at the World Cup

Both players went to the World Cup this summer after their countries scraped into the competition via the play-offs, and both are scoring for fun for their countries.

Anthony Elanga has scored a couple of absolute peaches for Sweden as they made it into the Round of 32. Even beyond the goals, he's looked sharp and more like the Elanga we saw at Nottingham Forest.

Yoane Wissa scored his second and third goals of the tournament at the weekend as they defeated Uzbekistan 3-1 to book their place in the knockout stages, where they will face England.

Can they bring this form home with them?

We said when the tournament got underway that it would be fantastic for our lads to get some confidence by performing on the biggest stage in the world, so of course, we're absolutely buzzing that Elanga and Wissa are firing on all cylinders again.

The question is, though, can they continue it when it matters (to us) in the Premier League? We're losing too many players already this summer and not recruiting fast enough, so we don't want to start casting players aside and weakening the squad even more. If they can come back and continue their World Cup form for Newcastle, we'll be laughing.

We'll even allow Wissa another goal in the knockout stages against England, as long as it's just a consolation.
