Yoane Wissa loan an option if redemption season isn’t offered - Report
How do you solve a problem like Yoane Wissa? That is the question facing Newcastle United as this forgettable season winds down.
Newcastle paid a staggering £55 million for Yoane Wissa just days before the striker turned 29. It was a crazy amount of money for a player of his age.
However, Wissa was the Premier League's highest scoring non-penalty taker last season and had a very clean injury record.
All of that changed when he got his move to Tyneside, however, as he picked up a bad knee injury on international duty just days after signing and after four months out, the ex-Brentford man has looked a shadow of his former self and now can't even get into the team.
Eddie Howe recently spoke about Wissa's difficult season and hinted that he's seeing vast improvement in him in training. He was given some minutes to prove himself on Saturday, albeit not many, but enough to blaze a shot over the bar that we all know he'd have buried last season when his confidence was high.
Yoane Wissa could be sent out on loan next season
There's an expectation that Wissa will be greatly improved next season after a full pre-season schedule at the club, and The Telegraph reports that if that isn't the case, there is a Plan B.
After having spent £55 million to bring him to Newcastle, it's going to be impossible to sell him in the summer and not take a devastating hit, but if someone offers to pay a decent chunk of his wages and a decent loan fee, he could make a temporary move away if Eddie Howe decides that the DR Congo striker isn't going to work at Newcastle.
Having said that, though, club insiders have spoken about how Wissa is looking 'sharper and leaner' in training of late, which backs up Howe's recent claims.
Yoane Wissa is devoid of confidence
We put his glaring miss on Saturday down to confidence. A fully fit, fully firing Wissa would have at least got that chance on target, but after hardly training all season and likely feeling immense pressure, we're not surprised he missed so spectacularly.
Our question is, even if Wissa proves himself in training over the summer, is he going to be the first-choice striker? Probably not, right? So will he want to stick around to sit on the bench for another season, especially given his age?
He's likely going to feel like he owes the club something, especially after forcing his move away from Brentford the way he did, but if he's not going to be given the opportunity to do so, what's the point in hanging around?
We really want it to work out for Wissa, mostly because we paid so much money for him, and now we're sort of stuck with him. But he's managed to turn a lot of the fanbase against him with some of his actions that have been perceived as antagonistic by some.
It's a long road to redemption. Only time will tell if he's on the right path.
