6 Brazilian Players who have represented Newcastle United

by Andy The Magpie · 28 March 2024, 08:47

With 14 trophies to its name, Newcastle is easily one of the top 10 successful Premier League clubs of all time. The Magpies have benefitted from different players of different calibre over the years, but one country that constantly stands out is Brazil. Brazil is well-known for legends like Pele, Rivaldo, De Lima Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Roberto Carlos and many others, and several of these South American talents have contributed to the history of the Magpies. It has always been this pleasing to the Brazilians that even top platforms, including https://pixbet-br.com.br/ commend their works via informed betting markets. So, for today, we will be exploring six Brazilian talents that have contributed to the history of Magpies.

Mirandinha (1987-1989, 54 appearances, 19 goals)

Mirandinha (Francisco Ernandi Lima da SIlva) made a record by being the first Brazilian player to appear in the English Premier League. Newcastle United signed the striker from Palmieras for £575,000 in 1987.

The club saw him as the perfect sportsman to step into the shoes of Peter Beardsley and Charles Waddle, two key players who had recently departed from the club. His first game was against Norwich City, which ended 1-1.

Mirandinha sparked to life in his third game which came against the Red Devils at Old Trafford. He netted a brace, and that helped to secure a 2-1 win over their red counterparts. His time at the club was blissful, and he departed for his old club in Brazil after Newcastle got relegated to the Championship.

Fumaca (1999-2000, 6 appearances, 0 goals)

Fumaca had a short stint in Newcastle. Sir Bobby Robson decided to take his chance with Fumaca because of his previous managerial experience with Brazilian stars like Ronaldo and Romario. In his 6 appearances (on loan from Chelsea, 2018-2019, 14 appearances, 2 goals) for the club, he was on the starting line-up only once in a 2-1 win against Tottenham in 1999.

Newcastle had to leave Fumaca out of fixtures to avoid making a permanent deal with him. After the 1999/2000 season, he decided to return to a club in his home country.  Before his time with Newcastle, the midfielder had featured for Birmingham City, Grimsby Town, Derby County, Watford, and Colchester United among others.

Bruno Guimarães Rodriguez Moura (2022-present, 74 appearances, 12 goals)

Bruno Rodriguez joined Newcastle United in early 2022 after signing a four-and-a-half-year deal with the club. He scored his first goal in his first 90-minute match against Southampton. Towards the end of 2023, the central midfielder put the pin on paper for a new 5-year deal with the Magpies.

Claudio Cacapa (2007-2008, 29 appearances, 2 goals)

Claudio Cacapa joined Newcastle United when Sam Allardyce was in charge of the club. Upon his signing, he impressed the manager during a victory over Newcastle Blue Star during a training session.

His first 8 appearances for the club were impressive, and he scored in a win against Tottenham. He left after the conclusion of the 2008/2009 season because the club was relegated to the 2nd division.

Kenedy (on loan from Chelsea, 2018-2019, 14 appearances, 2 goals)

Chelsea sealed the deal to purchase Kenedy on the 22nd of August, 2015. After an underwhelming loan spell with Watford, Newcastle got him on loan for the last set of games of the 2017/2018 campaign.

He recorded an assist on his debut against Burnley. His only two goals for Newcastle United came during a 3-0 victory over Southampton. After his stint in Newcastle, he had some spells in Spain and Brazil.

Joelinton (2019-present, 117 appearances, 23 goals)

Joelinton is the highest-scoring Brazilian player who has ever featured for the Magpies. The Sportsman commenced his career as a forward with Sport Recife, before joining Hoffenheim in 2015. During his time in Hoffenheim, he was loaned to Rapid Wien briefly. The Magpies and Joelington signed a six-year contract on 23rd July 2019.

After his debut, Alan Shearer, Newcastle's all-time highest goal scorer, criticized his performance. However, Joelington didn't disappoint again. His first goal for Newcastle United came in the 1-0 away win against Tottenham.

It took him another 5 months to net his second goal in a 4-1 victory over Rochdale in the FA Cup. When Eddie Howe became the club's coach during the 2021/2022 campaign, the manager decided to convert him into a midfielder.

Joelington excelled in this new position. He won an award as the best performer of the year for the 2021/2022 season. Fans and football analysts sang his praises throughout that year. Newcastle is keen on getting Joelington to sign a new deal, as his contract will expire in 2025. He remains an indispensable asset to the team.

Final thoughts

These players have contributed to Newcastle United's history in various ways, with some having more impact than others. Mirandinha, for example, was a prolific goalscorer during his time at the club, while Bruno Guimarães has been a key player since he arrived in 2022. Cacapa, Kenedy, and Joelinton have also made significant contributions to the team.
