Marc Guehi twist - Interesting news for Newcastle as Crystal Palace U-turn after Toon bids
The Marc Guehi saga dominated the end of our summer transfer window last year, but ended in frustration as Crystal Palace rejected a number of Newcastle's bids.
It remains to be seen if Paul Mitchell and co. will return to the table this month, but an intriguing update has arrived on the England international's availability.
Here's the latest, suggesting Palace's demands has now changed heading into 2025.
Marc Guehi's January price tag made public
According to The Athletic, Crystal Palace's stance on Marc Guehi looks set to soften this month after a series of summer bids from Newcastle United.
They report that, despite demanding £65m+ just a few months ago, an offer of £40m could be enough to tempt Palace chief Steve Parish to return to the table.
A snippet from the piece states: 'One source with knowledge of the situation, granted anonymity like all those consulted for this piece to protect relationships, told The Athletic that an offer in the region of £40million could be sufficient for transfer talks to gain traction, despite the fact Palace are reluctant to lose Guehi midway through the Premier League season.'
The piece states that 'Newcastle still really like him', with Arsenal, Spurs and Man City all showing interest; although the latter have opted to sign Toon target Abdukodir Khusanov instead from Lens.
However, there's a catch. Chelsea have joined the race following injuries to Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile. There ability to spend freely in the world of PSR is well known and it would allow the 24-year-old to remain in London.
Much better price - but has Mitchell moved on?
It's clear Guehi was a key target during Mitchell's first window at the club, but there's been growing reports that our sporting director prefers us to sign overseas gems over Premier League stars who'll come at a premium.
Lens' Abdukodir Khusanov has been targeted, although it looks like we've missed out on the 20-year-old, with Man City all set to sign the Uzbekistan international.
With that in mind, we'll be forced to look at other options and may be tempted to return for Guehi if £40m could be enough, unless there's another continental talent on our radar instead.
