Paul Mitchell blocked from signing £30m Brazilian after lining up Newcastle move - Report

The topic of PSR is becoming increasingly tiresome, but there is little doubt it's having a big impact at Newcastle United in yet another transfer window.

Not only is it forcing sales for the second window running, it is blocking us from adding to the squad at a time we could do with mid-season additions.

Last week, Eddie Howe admitted that we attempted to sign Man City recruit Abdukodir Khusanov before PSR hampered any bid and it's now emerged that we were blocked from landing yet another centre-back target.

Brazilian blow revealed

According to The Athletic, Newcastle thought they were also closing in on a move for Vitor Reis until PSR forced us to push back plans of a January bid.

Like Khusanov, another centre-back Newcastle 'heavily tracked', we also missed out on Reis to Man City, with the Brazilian talent completing a £30m move to the Etihad last week.

Chris Waugh reveals that Paul Mitchell and the club's recruitment team put a lot of work into positioning Newcastle at the 'front of the queue' for both Khusanov and Reis.

However, our PSR situation meant that Newcastle had to reluctantly delay any formal moves for the pair, deciding that summer deals were more realistic given our financial situation at the time.

But, as we know, that delay proved costly as Man City swooped in to sign both Khusanov and Reis, with Real Valladolid loanee Juma Bah another scouted before joining Pep Guardiola's side.

Newcastle taking cautious approach after June chaos?

Last week, The Telegraph's Luke Edwards reported that Amanda Staveley was so determined to back Eddie Howe and please Newcastle fans that she took risks from a financial perspective.

He believes that, had Staveley still been at the club, she would've delivered a right-winger signing this month and dealt with any PSR-related repercussions at a later stage.

A bold approach, but one that nearly cost us last June as we were suddenly forced to sell young stars Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh to avoid penalties and a potential 10-point hit.

With last summer's chaos in mind, it feels like PIF, Darren Eales and new sporting director Paul Mitchell are taking a cautious approach that focuses on the long-term and avoiding any chance of a repeat this June.
