Newcastle duo could still leave despite new deals - Interest from Celtic, Saudi and Turkey
Two Newcastle United players who have signed contract extensions this season may still be allowed to leave this summer.
The club have done well to keep on top of several deals up for renewal, whether that's to keep key members of the squad for at least another season (Fabian Schar) or agree to 12-month extensions to protect a player's value (Sean Longstaff).
Two of our more experienced squad members may fit into the latter category, with a new report revealing ongoing interest from north of the border and overseas as the summer transfer window edges closer.
Lascelles still a wanted man
Jamaal Lascelles is receiving interest over a permanent move away from the North East despite having his Newcastle contract extended by another year, reports The Chronicle’s Lee Ryder.
The Athletic reported that Lascelles quietly signed an extension with the club last year that was not formally announced, meaning he will no longer leave on a free this summer.
However, a move away can't be ruled out for the 31-year-old, with Ryder revealing that clubs in Turkey and Saudi Arabia are keen on the centre-back, who is still recovering from an ACL injury suffered last year.
Emil Krafth has also signed a contract extension leaving a healthy amount of defensive options for Eddie Howe next season, though a right-sided centre back is still expected to arrive this summer.
Celtic eyeing Toon stopper
Lee Ryder also reports that Martin Dubravka, who himself signed a new contract with Newcastle in February, is on Celtic's wanted list.
The 36-year-old was linked with a move to the Scottish giants last summer during their search for a successor to Joe Hart. Kasper Schmeichel instead moved to Parkhead, but the Dane is currently sidelined with a shoulder injury.
Newcastle may have taken a risk on both Dubravka and Lascelles and hedged their bets that their would be summer interest, although Howe has spoken highly about both and may be happy to keep the pair as squad players next season should moves away not materialise.
A younger keeper is expected to join Newcastle’s experienced goalkeeping unit this summer, with Burnley's James Trafford and Lille’s Lucas Chevalier amongst the names touted.
