What Newcastle insiders are now saying about transfers after early summer setbacks
We aren't even at the halfway mark in June, reducing the need to panic, but it has been a frustrating start to the summer window so far.
An ambitious attempt to land Dean Huijsen didn't come off, £30m striker target Liam Delap chose Chelsea instead and it's believed Bryan Mbeumo was a top target, only for his huge wage demands and £60m plus price tag to put a deal out of reach.
Signings in the early weeks of June are rare, but in a month that's already seen Chelsea, Man City, Liverpool and Man Utd make major signings, fans have grown a little concerned given Eddie Howe revealed his wish for decisive action after our final day defeat to Everton.
But what are the club saying about our transfer plans and early setbacks after a slow start?
Newcastle confident of strong summer
In their latest piece for The Athletic, George Caulkin and Chris Waugh have shared feedback from club insiders regarding Newcastle's transfer activity and plans moving forward.
They reveal that while there has been 'frustration', the club remains confident that prices will come down and become 'more realistic' as the summer progresses.
This comes after reports yesterday suggested Burnley are currently demanding close to £40m for James Trafford, along with claims of £50-60m price tag attached to Brighton's Joao Pedro and Nottingham Forest's Anthony Elanga.
Newcastle believe waiting for the right target will pay dividends over 'rushing to acquire someone who is not the ideal fit', although the club are in a position to sign this month - despite claims our PSR position will improve greatly from July onwards.
The Athletic have been informed that Newcastle are 'ready to act', with 'those at the top are confident the club will end the summer in a far stronger position than they started it.'
