This is brilliant from Newcastle's Seung-Soo Park - Superb interview after exciting debut
Newcastle United's summer has been rough and full of rejections, unsuccessful sagas and fears that Alexander Isak is going to leave.
But one arrival earlier this month saw 18-year-old talent Seung-Soo Park arrive from Suwon Samsung Bluewings.
The young winger has been part of the first team group in Singapore and South Korea, and made his non-competitive debut on Wednesday, playing in his hometown of Suwon against a K-League XI that beat us 1-0.
It was a drab affair for much of it, but Park's 10-minute cameo was the biggest bright spark, seeing him display an exciting mix of speed, urgency and dribbling.
However, what was equally impressive was his interview after the game, highlighting his drive to become the next South Korean star and a big hit in the Premier League.
Seung-Soo's superb interview
Speaking to the media in South Korea, Seung-Soo's response when asked if he'd like to become the next Son-Heung Min was superb and said a lot about his character.
“I don’t want to be the second someone else," he said (via KNT Football). "I want to be the first Park Seung-soo. I want to become someone others want to emulate.” A brilliant reply that bodes well.
Seung-Soo then talked about his "wonderful debut", his best qualities as a player and his determination to improve physically after seeing so many "perfect" athletes in the current Newcastle squad:
“I thought it would be amazing to make my debut in Korea, and the manager (Eddie Howe) gave me a great opportunity, so I was able to make a wonderful debut.
“My biggest strength is dribbling. I tried to show what I do best when I stepped onto the pitch. I’m glad the moment I was aiming for came out.”
“When I joined the team, I really felt that the players were physically and athletically perfect! I realised I need to build more strength through additional weight training.
“I want to adapt to the team quickly and work hard so I can make my Premier League debut as soon as possible.”
Park reveals praise and support from senior stars
The youngster was clearly given plenty of praise from his new Toon teammates after Wednesday's game, also revealing how he's been looked after by Kieran Trippier since arriving at the club.
“After the match, everyone congratulated me on my efforts,” he said told Chosun Biz.
“They also told me that I need to work harder in the future. Kieran Trippier takes great care of me. I became closer with Bruno Guimaraes, the captain, and Jacob Murphy after filming SNL together.”
Bruno is clearly taking the wide man under his wing also, while it's no surprise to hear big character Jacob Murphy helping Park settle into the group.
What's next for Park remains to be seen - he could be loaned out, kept for senior duties and sent to our Under-21s when we return - but his eye-catching cameo this week gives Howe plenty to ponder!
