David Hopkinson’s plan to transform Newcastle United - New details revealed
It’s been a summer of big change at Newcastle United, with seismic arrivals and departures both on and off the pitch.
Although the summer will mostly be remembered for the arrival of Nick Woltemade and the departure of Alexander Isak, the appointment of David Hopkinson as the new CEO could make a huge impact, with the move much needed after Darren Eales' health battles forced him to slow down over the past year.
With prior experience at Real Madrid and Madison Square Garden Group, the Canadian is intent on turning us into a financial powerhouse and making sure every aspect and individual involved in the club is ‘united’ in their goal.
And Hopkinson has already drawn up a great plan to learn about every facet of the club, and make sure everything is aligned to give Eddie Howe and the squad the best chance of success.
Hopkinson's 100-day push to transform Toon
According to The Mail’s Craig Hope, Hopkinson is expected to implement some sweeping changes to operations at the club in the early days of his tenure as CEO.
Conducting a 100-day review of the inner workings of the club, Hopkinson aims to make sure we have the 'right culture, strategy and personnel' on hand to deliver long term success.
Hope notes that new arrivals and faces can be expected on Tyneside to help facilitate that, as well as Hopkinson ‘showing the door’ to anyone who doesn’t align with that .It may sound harsh and dramatic, but after the tumultuous couple of years we’ve had off the pitch, it’s perhaps necessary for us to truly move onward and upward.
And it’s more than just the internal teams that Hopkinson is consulting in his review: he’s even met with members of the Fan Advisory Board and Alan Shearer to seek their input to gauge their thoughts on the best course of action is for the club.
It's thought Hopkinson is showing 'great curiosity' in every department of the club, is constantly asking questions and is keen to learn everything about the club before he teaches.
Visa deal a sign of big things to come?
Coming into his new position with immense commercial pedigree, Hopkinson and Newcastle United feels like a match made in heaven.
We’re fast becoming a desirable club in the eyes of potential commercial partners, having recently announced a major partnership with payments giant Visa, with brands like Guinness and Red Bull also in our growing portfolio.
Big deals like these will be Hopkinson’s bread and butter, and more can be expected to be signed if Real Madrid’s former head of global partnerships has his way.
In everything he plans to do, it looks like Hopkinson has visions of the Toon sitting at the table with Europe’s elite in the very near future. But before much of that can happen, he wants to guarantee that everyone at the club follows his mantra: “You’re either with us, or with yourself.” Few can argue that Hopkinson doesn’t have ours and Howe’s best interests in mind here.
