Three 4s and one 7/10 - Newcastle player ratings from Crystal Palace defeat
It was a familiar tale for Newcastle United on Sunday, as we collapsed late once again in a 2-1 defeat away to Crystal Palace.
Will Osula's opened the scoring, but more horrific defending in the final 10 minutes allowed Jean-Phillipe Mateta to turn the game on its head at Selhurst Park.
Here are our marks out of 10 and comments on each Mag involved in another damning defeat.
Starting 11
Ramsdale (6) - Made a couple of sharp saves in the first half but let himself down with some poor distribution at times (wind may have been a factor). Couldn’t do too much about either goal.
Livramento (4) - Has always been known as a solid defensive full back with limitations in attack but when his defensive work is poor then it really stands out. Hasn’t looked right since his return from injury and it almost seems like his head is elsewhere at the moment. £60million from Man City seems like a no brainer based on recent form.
Thiaw (5) - Won his fair share of aerial duels and was largely untroubled until the introduction of the more robust Mateta. Worryingly, we seem to struggle with physical centre forwards which is a cause for concern.
Botman (5) - Was actually playing quite well until giving away a stupid penalty in injury time. Could argue that it was harsh and that he was also having his shirt pulled but he gave the referee the opportunity to give a penalty and it was never going to be overturned.
Hall (6.5) - Continues to be a bright spot even on some pretty dark days. Is in real danger of leaving the club behind with how quickly he’s improving and it’s up to the club to provide him with the platform his talents warrant. Indispensable.
Miley (6) - A welcome return and chipped in with the assist for Osula. Definitely looked rusty and was guilty of some cheap giveaways but adds a calmness on the ball. Could be worth revisiting the right back experiment going forward.
Joelinton (5) - Picked up a stupid yellow card and will now miss the next two games. Wasn’t able to assert his physical dominance in midfield and offered little by way of attacking threat.
Tonali (5.5) - Below the standard that we know he can produce at exactly the time we need him to produce the most. Couldn’t get control of the game at all and is wilting under the pressure of being our talisman in the absence of Bruno. Wasn’t bad but we needed more.
Murphy (4) - Continues to frustrate. Given the captains armband but was guilty of wasting some decent attacking positions. Has been a great servant and is clearly loved by teammates and staff but his limitations are clear for all to see.
Gordon (4) - Another one who is looking worryingly disengaged as we approach the end of the season. Looked completely out of sorts and wasted a great attacking position in the first half which summed up where his Newcastle career is currently at right now. A summer exit could be on the cards.
Osula (7) - Showed great composure to score the opening goal and was one of the few who could leave the field knowing they gave their all. Held the ball up quite well at times and justified the managers decision to start him ahead of Woltemade and Wissa.
Substitutes
Barnes (4.5) - Brought on for the ineffective Gordon and was equally as ineffective. Had an opportunity to apply pressure to get back in the starting eleven but looked rusty and off the pace.
Woltemade (NR)
Ramsey (NR)
Wissa (NR)
Elanga (NR)
