Aaron Ramsdale nominated for monthly Premier League award
Nick Pope regained his place in Newcastle United's starting lineup last time out as the Magpies faced Arsenal.
The 34-year-old had sat out the previous five Premier League games for United, with Eddie Howe preferring on-loan stopper Aaron Ramsdale.
Neither keeper has been particularly good at keeping clean sheets this season, and neither has outshone the other with their overall performances, but I will say that from a personal perspective, I feel a lot less uneasy when Ramsdale is between the sticks.
Nick Pope is a great shot stopper, but his decision-making has me on edge, and that dodgy brain of his was on full display in the game against Arsenal when he came racing out of his box to beat Viktor Gyokeres to the ball, completely missed it and wiped out the Arsenal forward instead.
Aaron Ramsdale is nominated for the Coca-Cola Save of the Month for April
Whether that error is enough to make Eddie Howe revert to Aaron Ramsdale, we'll have to wait to find out, but the fact that the Southampton loanee has been nominated for a monthly award may tip the scales in his favour.
Aaron Ramsdale's one-handed save from a Daniel Muñoz effort in the 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace has been selected as one of the nominees for April's Save of the Month.
You can vote for Ramsdale's stop on the Premier League website.
Two former Newcastle goalkeepers join Ramsdale on the shortlist
Interestingly, there are two former Newcastle goalkeepers on the shortlist too, as Leeds United's Karl Darlow and Burnley's Martin Dubravka are listed as well.
Martin Dubravka may have been relegated with Burnley, but the Slovakian has been in outstanding form this season, topping the charts with the most saves of any goalkeeper in the Premier League with an astonishing 122 saves. Next on the list is Ðorďe Petrović of Bournemouth, who is currently on 100.
As much as we hate looking back over and wondering 'what if' we can't help wondering if the club made the right call letting Dubravka go and keeping Pope.
