Anthony Gordon thanks Newcastle in ITV interview after Barcelona transfer
Anthony Gordon recently sealed his 'dream move' to Barcelona in what seemed like an inevitable exit from Newcastle United.
The writing looked to be on the wall for Gordon for a while as the Premier League season wound down.
Eddie Howe kept Gordon on the bench for the last few games of the season while telling the media he's focusing on the future - essentially admitting that he knew that Anthony Gordon would not be at the club next season.
Bayern Munich was the favourite to sign the England winger for a while, but when Barcelona came knocking, things moved very quickly and a £70m move was sealed.
Gordon thanks Newcastle in ITV interview
Gordon flew out to Spain to finalise the deal before then heading to Florida to link up with England ahead of the World Cup.
The Three Lions were in action last night as they beat New Zealand 1-0 in a warm-up friendly. Gordon played the second half of the game.
ITV interviewed Gordon at full-time, where he spoke about his move to Barcelona while thanking Newcastle for their support during the transfer process.
“It’s an unbelievable scenario. I must thank Newcastle and Barcelona because they were both unbelievable with me. Both worked on my behalf and really looked after me through the process to get it done.
“You were at the Euros last time with me and I was going through the other transfer stuff, it was really difficult and I couldn’t really shake it, so I must thank both clubs. I’m really grateful that’s done.”
Gordon only seemed to try in the Champions League this season
The Liverpool transfer rumours during the Euros really affected Gordon during that tournament and then into his season at Newcastle. He did eventually recover and started to perform again.
We're not sure why he couldn't do that this season, though, unless it was a Champions League game, of course. It's almost as if he knew he had more eyes on him when playing in Europe and that he could catch the eye of a 'bigger' team.
Are we being too cynical here? Probably.
