Bruno Guimarães blasted by Brazilian media following defeat to Norway

Bruno Guimarães had a night to forget on Sunday as Brazil were sent home from the World Cup by Norway.

Erling Haaland was his usual cyborg self, scoring twice to send Norway to their first-ever World Cup quarter-final, where they will face England.

Neymar Jr scored a consolation penalty in the second-half stoppage time, which is something Bruno Guimarães failed to do in the first half with the score at 0-0.

It may just be because I'm getting on a bit, but I absolutely hate stuttered run-ups during penalties, and I feel that when a player does one and misses, they deserve it. That was a painful one to watch last night as Bruno stepped up and halted his run to try and catch out Ørjan Nyland. It didn't work, and Bruno's tame penalty was easily saved.

Bruno Guimaraes received a harsh rating from Globo Esporte

We feared that Bruno would receive the brunt of the blame for Brazil's exit after that miss, and the Brazilian media didn't let us down in that regard.

Brazilian outlet Globo Esporte rated the players after the game, and while none of the players fared very well, only Endrick received a score as low as Bruno Guimarães', with both handed a 4/10. To be fair, though, while Endrick's second-half miss was all the excuse GE needed to give him a 4/10, they had a bit more to say about Bruno than his missed penalty.

"His worst game of the World Cup - and not just because of the missed penalty early in the game. Even before this move, he had already made a mistake in the game that resulted in a (disallowed) goal for Norway. He had less possession of the ball at his feet and only completed 15 passes in the attacking field."

Bruno was excellent at the World Cup until last night

Bruno wasn't the only Brazilian who was wasteful in possession. Misplaced passes were the order of the day from the Selecao as they looked absolutely miles off the Brazil we old geezers grew up watching.

The Newcastle captain was having a fantastic tournament up until last night's game, and he can still return to Newcastle with his head held high.

Hopefully that's exactly what he's doing - returning to the Toon, head held high and with a big statement of intent for the Newcastle fans that he's staying at St James' Park so we can put all of this speculation behind us.
