Jermaine Jenas claims Bruno Guimarães is 'wasting part of his career' at Newcastle

The Bruno Guimaraes rumour mill is in full swing once again this summer as the Brazilian is linked with a Newcastle United exit.

Rarely, if ever, has a transfer window passed in which Bruno Guimarães has not been linked with a move away from St James' Park.

Whenever a player of Bruno's quality is playing for a non-Septic Six club, they are never allowed to just be; they must always be linked with a move away from whatever club they are at.

Bruno has stayed loyal to Newcastle United for over four years, but due to the sales the Magpies have made so far this summer, namely Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali, the narrative is that the Brazilian could also be looking for a way out.

Jermaine Jenas fears Bruno Guimaraes could push to leave Newcastle

Also, the fact that Newcastle failed to qualify for Europe only adds fuel to the fire when journalists and pundits claim that Guimarães could leave Newcastle. Jermain Jenas has leant on both of these points when voicing his concerns over Bruno Guimarães' future with 10Bet (h/t The Mag).

“Newcastle United need to go mad in the market…but I really don’t see how they do it at all. There are a couple of players they’ve been linked with who are very good prospects, but when I look at Bruno Guimaraes, his age, and where he’s at in his career – plus what he has already done for Newcastle – I just sense an Isak situation coming again.

“Unfortunately for him [Bruno Guimaraes], there is a lot of talent that has already left, and he’s almost like the last of the big dogs out the door. They [Newcastle United] might make his life very difficult but they’re not doing enough. If I was Bruno Guimaraes, I’d be looking around going, “What’s the plan here?” Because he should be playing Champions League football week in, week out, and every year that he’s not, he’s wasting part of his career.

"He has been a very loyal servant. You never hear anything coming out of his mouth in terms of demands, and he has always been very well-behaved at the football club. You can’t always say that about some foreign players when they go away on international duty and talk to the local press to get stories out. He hasn’t done that. It’s sad for Newcastle, but I don’t think they can do enough to keep him personally.”

Only Bruno has the answers

It's hard to really refute what Jenas is saying, if we're being honest. While our gut still tells us Bruno will stay, and it won't be a case of the club forcing him to, we do believe he will genuinely want to stay; there is that niggling doubt that is getting louder and louder.

After selling two big stars and replacing them with younger, relatively untested players, it's easy to see how someone like Bruno could be concerned. However, we do believe that he'll have been fully aware that Tonali and Gordon were going to be sold this summer and what the plan was to replace them.

As for wasting his career, that bit we do take issue with. We weren't competing in the Champions League when he agreed to come to Newcastle, and he didn't agitate to leave when we failed to qualify two seasons ago either.

Obviously, as he begins the descent on his career, his feelings may change, and he may feel that time is running out to bring home a major honour like the Champions League, but we just don't see him making a fuss over leaving. He may be open to it, but we will not have another Alexander Isak situation with him.
