Lucas Bergvall update from Keith Downie after claims of £46m bid

On Friday night, it was reported that Newcastle United had a £46 million bid for Lucas Bergvall rejected by Tottenham Hotspur.

After splashing the cash already this summer, Tottenham Hotspur are now in the process of recouping some money, and it looks as though they are ready to grant the 20-year-old Sweden star his wish of leaving the club this summer.

After the arrival of Sandro Tonali and Matheus Fernandes, Bergvall put in a transfer request, knowing that his place in the starting XI was under threat.

Nottingham Forest are extremely keen on signing the young midfielder, but on Friday, Newcastle entered the race.

There was a bit of conflicting information initially, with some reports claiming Newcastle had made a bid and others suggesting that Spurs had offered Bergvall to Newcastle.

Keith Downie feels Spurs are creating a bidding war

Sky Sports' Keith Downie has taken to YouTube to provide a bit of clarity on the situation, claiming that Spurs have approached Newcastle about the possibility of signing, but no official bid was made.

Instead, discussions took place regarding what it would take to sign Bergvall, with Newcastle floating the £46 million price and Spurs saying that wouldn't be enough.

Downie also went on to say that he feels that Tottenham are using Newcastle to try and get Nottingham Forest to increase their bid and that Bergvall is more likely to end up at the City Ground.

Newcastle to cool their interest in Bergvall

Meanwhile, Luke Edwards has now claimed that Newcastle aren't willing to pursue Bergvall any further unless Spurs lower their asking price.

Right now, it doesn't look like Lucas Bergvall will be heading to Newcastle any time soon, but as Edwards said, there's still plenty of time for things to change.

We hope that they do, as we were very impressed with Bergvall last season in a shockingly poor Spurs side. Is he worth over £50 million? That's up for debate.

Given his high ceiling and the fact that we're looking to buy him from a Premier League rival, he probably is. In a couple of seasons, we could still make a hefty profit off him if he continues to develop. It's a good investment as far as we're concerned, but it all depends on finances at the club, really.
