Newcastle handed potential boost as Man City target Alexander Nübel
Bayern Munich were reportedly ready to offer goalkeeper Alexander Nǔbel to Newcastle United as part of the deal to sign Anthony Gordon.
The 29-year-old stopper is surplus to requirements at Bayern Munich as Manuel Neuer is still going strong. Nübel has spent three years out on loan since he signed for Bayern Munich with a view to taking over the German international, but he's now realised his future lies elsewhere.
Claims that Nübel was to be offered as a player exchange to help land Anthony Gordon have been downplayed, which is certainly music to Newcastle fans' ears after the Odysseas Vlachodimos debacle.
Newcastle are on the hunt for a new goalkeeper, though, and perhaps that's why Bayern thought it would be a good idea.
Could Nübel help Trafford pursuit?
Interestingly, German outlet Sport Bild is now claiming that Manchester City is interested in Nübel, and while Sport Witness has covered this story from the angle of it impacting the potential Anthony Gordon swap deal, we see things differently.
Manchester City has Gianluigi Donnarumma and James Trafford fighting for that No 1 spot, but it's a battle Trafford feels he's not going to win and is therefore seeking an exit in the summer.
Newcastle have been long-term admirers of Trafford and have tried to sign the young England keeper a couple of times to no avail, but they are thought to be keen to try again in the upcoming window.
If Manchester City are looking at Nübel, it could be because they are preparing for Trafford's exit, and Newcastle could be his destination.
It won't be easy for Newcastle to land James Trafford
Other clubs are in the running for Trafford, however, so it's not a given that Newcastle will be the beneficiaries if he is to leave Manchester City.
The German media could just be using Manchester City to drum up interest in Nübel on behalf of Bayern, however, as Bild are often a mouthpiece for the German champions.
Fingers crossed there's an element of truth to it and that our wild assumptions turn out to hold some merit too.
