Newcastle showing 'great interest' in Victor Froholdt - Report
A busy summer awaits at Newcastle United, with first-team improvements and squad depth needed alongside a mini clear-out.
A new goalkeeper is needed after Nick Pope's most unconvincing season yet, while full-back cover is a must to protect Lewis Hall and replace the departing Kieran Trippier.
Further up the pitch, there could be more comings and goings up top, alongside a new left winger should Anthony Gordon leave, while midfielder reinforcements remain one to watch as Joe Willock and Sandro Tonali face uncertain futures.
On that note, we've seen links to AZ Alkmaar's Kees Smit, Auxerre's Kevin Danois and Lamine Camara of Monaco, but a new name has cropped up via the Danish press this week.
Froholdt attracting Newcastle interest
Newcastle have joined the race to sign Porto midfielder Victor Froholdt, according to reports in Denmark.
Danish outlet Bold are reporting that Newcastle, Arsenal and Liverpool are all showing 'great interest' in the 20-year-old, who has shone in his first season with the Portuguese giants.
Froholdt joined Porto from Copenhagen last summer in a deal worth £19m, signing a contract until 2030 that includes a £73m release clause.
Bold believe it's 'far from certain' that the Danish international leaves this summer, despite Premier League interest, as he's now established himself as a key player in Porto's team.
The 6ft 1" midfielder has eight goals and six assists in all competitions, racking up 50 appearances this season, 12 of which came in Porto's run to the Europa League quarter-finals.
The Dane ticks several boxes
Whether or not Newcastle are seriously interested remains to be seen, and there is no guarantee we'd attract him to the North East when Porto are on track to play Champions League football next season.
However, he does tick several boxes based on the sort of profile we're likely to target this summer.
Not only is Ross Wilson expected to push for European gems over 'Premier League proven', Froholdt is young (20), has high potential, and stands over 6ft tall, with Howe known to like height and physicality in his engine room.
The issue may be our ability to attract such talents without the offer of any European football, especially if Arsenal and Liverpool really are in the mix.
Potentially one to watch, although the signing of another midfielder will only become a serious talking point if one of Tonali or Willock departs.
