Nick Woltemade’s summer priority revealed in Sky Germany update
Nick Woltemade's Newcastle United future is far from certain after a difficult first season in the Premier League.
Despite becoming a huge fan favourite, Nick Woltemade has found life in the Premier League somewhat tricky following his big-money move from VfB Stuttgart in the summer.
The German international made an extremely positive start to life in England, scoring four goals in his first five games in the Premier League, but rapidly faded into obscurity as English defences worked out how to nullify the danger he posed.
Even though the goals dried up, most Newcastle fans were impressed with his close control and footballing brain, while others were quick to point out his lack of pace and tendency to go to ground when challenged.
Nick Woltemade is almost certain to stay at Newcastle
We reported on Wednesday that Woltemade isn't seeking an exit from Newcastle despite being frustrated with his lack of game time and will instead seek assurances over his future and his place in the side.
That has now been backed up by Sky Sport Germany's Florian Plettenberg, although he hasn't closed the door on a potential exit.
"If Nick Woltemade’s playing time does not change, a move in the summer cannot be ruled out.
"However, his main goal is to stay. He feels comfortable and has a good relationship with Eddie Howe.
"He has enquiries. However, FC Bayern were not interested in him until before the second leg against PSG."
The best is definitely yet to come
It's all starting to look positive in terms of the German striker remaining on Tyneside for at least another season, and we fully support that.
A full pre-season with Eddie Howe and the squad will dramatically improve his tactical awareness and define his role in the team. He can also do some strength training over the summer so he's not so easily felled when challenged.
Our big concern has always been that by trying to mould him to fit into Newcastle's style of play, we nerf his natural instincts, and we really don't want that to happen.
We love Woltemade's inventiveness on the pitch. That dinked through ball for Yoane Wissa against Arsenal was a thing of beauty, and we don't want to lose that aspect of his game; we just want him to be in the right position when needed and for our wingers to put the ball where he wants it.
