St James' Park ready to bring in £120m to region during Euro 2028

Newcastle United's St James' Park stadium will be used as a venue when the UK hosts the European Championships in 2028.

The fact that Newcastle's stadium was selected as a venue was a huge indicator that there wasn't expected to be much movement in terms of the new or improved stadium by 2028, and given how we still dont' ahve a decision on whether tos tay or go, we'd say that it it's a safe bet the ground won't be in or near a construction site when the tournament gets underway.

Euro 2028 will kick off on 9th June 2028 and will continue for a month until 9th July. St James' Park will host five games, and if England do their job, they will play their round of 16 game on the hallowed turf.

Newcastle City Council has announced today (Tuesday 23rd June) that they expect St James' Park's involvement to be a huge financial boost to the region.

Newcastle City Council expect £120m financial boost as part of Euro 2028

The comprehensive statement from the council states that work is already underway to ensure that Newcastle has plenty to offer visitors during the tournament, while boasting they expect it to bring in £120 million to the region.

"Preparations and plans are well underway to not only show off our incredible city and present activities and events for hundreds of thousands of visitors and football fans, but also ensure daily life continues for residents and businesses. These plans include a massive UEFA Festival, with City Centre sites and park locations, details of which will be revealed soon.

"Proposals are also being drawn up to include local schools and communities in a number of events in the run up and during the tournament while there will be opportunities for over 1,750 volunteers to work around the city. This tournament is about shaping a lasting legacy built by our people, ensuring local communities feel the benefits long after the final whistle.

"Although it won’t be until December 2027 when the draw reveals which countries will be playing at St James’ Park, the five games and month-long tournament is expected to bring in an additional £120million into the local economy. EURO 2028 is a major catalyst for growth across the city and the North East, boosting tourism, supporting local business, and driving regional investment."

St James' Park is no stranger to hosting international events

St James' Park hosted three games during Euro 96 and was an Olympic venue when England hosted the 2012 games, with several matches hosted at the iconic stadium. While it was never filled to capacity for the Olympic games, the city was positively buzzing nonetheless.

The Euros are likely to bring much more foot traffic to the city, and we expect to see St James' Park much closer to capacity than during the Olympics.

Fingers crossed England make it through to the round of 16, and our fantastic stadium will host the Three Lions on their way to lifting the trophy on home turf!
