Newcastle deal not dead, winger a "big target" and Chelsea CB discussed - Ben Jacobs
According to Ben Jacobs, Newcastle United's move for Dominic Calvert-Lewin is not dead just yet, with the club prepared to revisit a deal if the Everton forward lowered his salary demands.
The striker was linked with a move to St James' Park while Everton attempted to sign Yankuba Minteh at the end of June, but a deal broke down over personal terms. A month later, it may be one to watch later in the window given he's out of contract next summer and Eddie Howe without a back-up striker with Callum Wilson sidelined through injury...again.
Jacobs also reveals that Nottingham Forest's Anthony Elanga is a player we "love" and a "big target", but Nottingham Forest are determined to keep the Swedish international after rejecting a part-exchange proposal featuring Elliot Anderson last month.
Last but not least, the journalist claims Chelsea's Trevoh Chalobah is a name we've discussed in recruitment meetings, claiming centre-back's name has come up in conversations as we look to bring in another right-sided option.
Jacobs on Calvert-Lewin (NUFC Matters Transfer show) - “Dominic Calvert-Lewin is still a player Newcastle would buy if they could agree terms with the player, but they were not able to do that in the lead-up to the PSR deadline, when it was about Everton, Minteh and Calvert-Lewin going the other way.
"Just because things go quiet doesn’t mean Newcastle won’t return, but at this stage I’m told they’re not in active talks to reignite that Calvert-Lewin deal.”
Jacobs on Elanga Forest Fan TV: “Newcastle love Elanga and they tried to get Elanga originally in the deal for Elliot Anderson. Elanga has been a big target for Newcastle, but they’ve had no breakthrough and Forest don’t want to sell.”
Jacobs on Chalobah (GiveMeSport) - 'Newcastle United have also discussed Chalobah and are in need of a right-sided centre-back given Jamaal Lascelles is out with an anterior cruciate ligament injury until the end of the year. The Magpies don't have European football next season but are well-positioned to compete for it in the long-term.'
Elanga could be a very handy Miguel Almiron replacement if signed as a squad player alongside a top right-winger, but it seems Forest are in no rush to sell. Calvert-Lewin is well worth avoiding if he's demanding big money, although this feels like one to watch if he agrees to lower his demands.
As for Chalobah, he's a good player who could improve under Howe and add some athleticism to our right-sided centre-back department, but is he really the long-term upgrade on Fabian Schar we're crying out for? I'm not so sure.
