£50m asking price set to be slapped on Newcastle and Spurs target - Report
It would be no surprise if Paul Mitchell pushed the club to pursue several overseas gems this summer, with a Premier League tax often applied to domestic targets.
A mixture of both may be our best course of action as we look to add quality and depth to our squad ahead of a return to Europe next season.
One area almost certain to be strengthened is down our right wing. Jacob Murphy has shone with 22 goal involvements in all competitions, but he has no competition or cover following Miguel Almiron's January sale.
This brings us to a domestic target that could now be available for less than the excessive asking price mooted last month.
Toon target could leave for £50m
Four weeks ago, The Telegraph reported that Southampton would demand a whopping £100m for star man Tyler Dibling this summer.
It seemed excessive to put it mildly and while they have ever right to demand what they wish for one of their own, he was never going to command such a fee should he push to leave following relegation.
Today, The Chronicle report that the England youth international is expected to cost £50m instead, handing Newcastle a potential opportunity to negotiate a far more reasonable deal with Paul Mitchell's former club.
Spurs' name isn't going away and it's believed the North London club are confident about their chances of landing the 19-year-old.
The question is, are Newcastle still keen? He's clearly a player we've watched for some time - Dan Ashworth attempted to sign him during his Under-21 days with the Saints - but more proven Premier League options may be tempting alternatives, especially if Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo could be available for £10m more.
Dibling on Southampton struggles
After a run of defeats, Southampton picked up a stoppage time point at West Ham over the weekend - but have work to do if they are to avoid being the worst team in Premier League history.
Speaking about their struggles, the winger said: "I don't try to think about it and just go in to train every day and work hard and train the best I can. At the end of the day, I love Southampton.
"I have been here since I was eight. It is such a great team and I am working to do big things with them.
"Obviously, nobody wants to be the worst team in the history of the league. I don't want to be and none of the squad wants to be so that's what we are trying to do, get a point, get a couple more points so we don't have that title above our heads."
