Eddie Howe rejects Newcastle United rumour - “He’s going absolutely nowhere”

Last week, Lewis Miley was linked with a potential move away from Newcastle United.

Fabrizio Romano reported that a number of Premier League and Bundesliga sides were monitoring his situation, aware of the fact he's struggled for minutes this season behind star trio Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton.

Eddie Howe was asked about his future and that report in this morning's press conference and it's fair to say the boss offered a pretty emphatic response...

Howe hits back at Miley claims

Eddie Howe rebuffed Romano’s claims that Miley may leave the club this summer. The manager told the media that the “pivotal” midfielder is a big part of his plans at Newcastle.

Speaking this morning, Howe insisted that the 18-year-old will continue to grow with the team - with the manager’s view being the starlet will be around the set-up for the long haul.

“Lewis is absolutely pivotal to our future here,” said Howe. “From my perspective, he’s going absolutely nowhere."

”We want to build the team with him in it, for many, many years, that’s my thought process.”

Big season ahead?

Concerns around Miley’s development have focused around his lack of gametime this season. The teenager missed nine games to start the campaign after suffering a metatarsal fracture in pre-season, and has since gone on to make 16 first team appearances this season.

Newcastle could play between 55 and 60 games next season should we compete deep into both cups and European competition, Miley will be a vital option for rotation especially with the running required from our midfield in the current system.

The Club will still be sore after losing Elliot Anderson last summer and there is no chance we sell Miley - and Howe’s words on the young talent show he intends to keep the lad from Stanley around for the long-term future.

However, it is key to give Miley more minutes next season to ensure he continues to develop. His metatarsal fracture immediately followed a back injury in 2024, while in 2025 he has struggled too break into the formidable and frankly undroppable midfield three who have managed to remain fit.
